Forgive me if I sound like a record stuck in a groove, but I've always maintained that so much of the charm of the 70s BBC version was down to David Weir's clever rewriting of the original scripts. Although he had a deep respect for the source material he brought a warm, contemporary slant to NTV's adaptation (whereas The Water Margin almost entirely lacks humour - he seemed to know what was appropriate to each project he worked on). I'd love to see more of his work - anyone who wrote for series like Space: 1999, A Family at War, The Troubleshooters and Danger Man (the forerunner of The Prisoner), and is responsible for one of the great unmade Doctor Who stories (the wonderfully named 'The Killer Cats of Geng Sengh'), can't be all bad...
