Well, having managed to miss most of them due to my stupidity, but having watched the one where Tripitaka gets her, err.. his arm cut off then having a spear inserted into his throat while being Crucified. In slow motion. Ahem! Can't think why they didn't dub that one back in the day! In fact the bit where they put something into Tripitaka's ear and pull out her scrolls would, I suspect, have been even more unexceptable, just imagine the "Monkey was responsible for bursting my child's eardrums" headlines. Anyway, having seen the Japanese subtitled versions I was suprised at how literal the English translations were, and seem to miss somthing that was in the 70s English versions, but not I suspect, the orginals. Sandy comes over all as more cheerful and bookish and not the wonderfully miserable version we're use to. And his potty mouth seems a little out of place. Of the voices Monkey, Tripitaka and the Horse/Dragon/Princess/Manuel all sound as I remember them, Sandy and esp. Piggys far less so, but given the circumstances I'm glad we've got the orginal cast together. I've got the Subtitled version, and I don't think I'll be (re-)buying the dubbed versions as I'm not sure how much we gain from the dubbing. But then I've never had much problems with subtitles.
