Here's a message I received in August - sorry for the delay in forwarding it on! - ---- Hi, I am a part-time editor of an English language magazine on Japanese popular culture called "Eye-Ai." The magazine is published in Tokyo; I wonder if you have ever seen it? Each month, the magazine highlights a famous Japanese star/performer. And for November, will we be featuring Nishida Toshiyuki! I would be very glad to include info on your site, your page deciated to him, etc. if you are so interested. Also, if you have any current information on him, how he has been doing since his heart attack etc. that I can share with our readers, I would be so appreciative. Of course, anything you (your readers/site) might share with me on Nishida-san that I include in our article, I would gladly thank you/your site in the body of the article. We had been hoping to interview him directly, but due to his health, and busy schedule, it appears we won't be able to. Best regards, Karen Riley, Editor/Eye-Ai Magazine - ---- If any of you can provide me with some interesting information about what Toshiyuki Nishida has been doing recently, how his health has been following his heart attack, let me know and I'll pass it on to Karen @ Eye-Ai Magazine. The 4-page Monkey special is a good read - I've scanned it in and you can now view it at the bottom of my page: http://www.monkeyheaven.com/magazines_blackandwhite.html There's some very amusing bits in there about me (I was interviewed for this article) - for example: "Avid Monkey fans aren't hard to find, as the 4000 hits a week on www.MonkeyHeaven.com can attest. However, few are more obsessed than Howell Parry, who convenes the site, a typical den of geekery crammed with episode guides, wallpaper download and actor biographies, all delivered in a hail of exclamation marks. Parry was reunited with his favourite childhood show after a 17-year hiatus on late-night cable in 1996. "I just sat there grinning through the whole thing, and the next day I created a website," the 31-year-old software engineer explains from his home in Manchester." And my favourite bit (I love that it talks about me achieving "nerd nirvana": "Parry achieved what you might call 'nerd nirvana' when, on a Japanese backpacking adventure in 1998, he and a fellow obsessed English fan met their idol at one of the star's legendary cabaret shows. "That was just the most incredible day of my life," he says excitedly. 'Old Monkey' did his Vegas-style turn, crooning numbers like "Tie a Yellow Ribbon" and "My Way" in Japanese, and performing tricks such as pulling a tablecloth from beneath dinner plates and playing tunes on a bicycle pump. Irrepressible! At one point, Sakai indicated his trembling guests, an, as recounted on Parry's website. "He then stood at the edge of the stage and clapped us, along with all the thousands of people in the audience. This was an incredible moment!!! Masaaki Sakai was applauding us!!!" Since then, the story of Howell Parry and the Monkey King has never let up. Fabulous Films took him up on his offer to write the official episode synopses for the video releases. he has run on to a soccer pitch dressed as Pigsy to promote the DVDs and even invited to join competition winners in adding his voice to the newly dubbed episodes (Collings, for whom it's a job, quipped that "they must have lost the competition")." Hopefully at some point in the future, I'll type up a transcript of this article - but for now, you can read it by viewing the images on the webpage indicated above.
