And if so, what do we make of the folk-Buddhism espoused by "Monkey"? Personally, it comes across to me very much as medieval Chinese folk-Buddhism, and doesn't actually represent "high Buddhism" very well - apart from anything else, the historical Buddha was no deity sitting on a cloud - he was just some clever dude in monk's robes, and certainly couldn't shape-shift into female form! "Monkey" almost Christianises the old chap into some kind of God-figure! ;-) Yes, there are Buddhist traditions around that effectively "deify" Siddartha to an extent, and some folks do pray to him as if he were a god (cf. Tibetan tradition, amongst others, and in Scotland, where I am, the main influence is indeed Tibetan, although it's all just too orange and yellow for my taste, and the black-robed austerity of the Japanese appeals more to my Calvinist side!), but even within them, it's recognised t! hat Siddartha is actually just a human, albeit a rather important and visionary trail-blazer who deserves homage mainly for our sake than his own - it's good Karma to bow to others. :-) But I do love the "words of wisdom" from the Narrator, I have to confess! Sometimes I even wonder if my 70s childhood, watching "Monkey" on the box obsessively, was actually where I started becoming Buddhist in the first place! ;-) Oh, the power of "Monkey" - it should never be underestimated! LOL! One of these days, I plan to read the original medieval novel... yours, aye, steve sweeney-turner, ba (hons), pg.dip, phd ("suibhne an seingbhlen-sa") ty arianrhod, strathbrock, silicon glen, scotland http://www.cyberscotia.com "Mayst thou go, O Suibhne, in madness, without respite!" - - St. Ronan to Suibhne Geilt, in *Buile Suibhne*, C12th - --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. I've already indoctrinated my kids with a love of it... Yeah, me and my 6-year-old daughter regularly drive my ex nuts watching it! She (daughter, not ex!) loves it, and has even started taking to doing a bit of Zen meditation from time-to-time - classic quote after our first sitting session was "Daddy, it's really funny when you brain stops being noisy to itself"! ;-) My advice? - get them while they're young! The original book is of Taoist mythology, whose author considered himself a Taoist (I also consider myself a Taoist). The point I'd like to make about Taoism (as I see it anyway) is that it doesn't preclude you from also believing in Buddha, Christ or L.Ron Hubbard. I also live in Scotland and the Buddhists I know are all in the Indian tradition, although admirers of the Dalai Lama (of course). ___________________________________________________________ ALL-NEW Yahoo! The original book is of Taoist mythology, > whose author considered himself a Taoist Interesting - didn't know that bit! However, "Monkey" not only has Buddhist characters in it, but also has the historical Buddha him(/her)self! ;-) Maybe it's a Buddhist story written by a Taoist, then! But certainly, in China, Taoism, although a lot older than Buddhism, informs the Ch'an tradition at every end and turn. > (I also consider myself a Taoist). The point I'd like to make about Taoism > (as I see it anyway) is that it doesn't preclude you from also believing > in Buddha, Christ or L.Ron Hubbard. Or even Eric von Daniken! ;-) But yes, unlike most exclusivist Western religious traditions, being a Taoist or a Buddhist doesn't mean you have to give other beliefs up. I'm also a pagan, as well as a Buddhist (and the Tibetan shamanic-through Buddhist tradition is informative on this score), and real historical European paganism (which I follow, rather than all the trendy New Age nonsense) was also a pretty flexible system. Simple example is that 50% of the ancient Greek gods weren't even Greek in origin! If Plato had heard of Siddartha, he'd probably have adopted him into the pantheon, too! ;-) > I also live in Scotland Hullawrair, Jimmy! > and the Buddhists I know are all in the Indian tradition, although > admirers of the Dalai Lama (of course). Aye, the auld DL is an amusing chap! But Indian Buddhism is pretty-much depleted these days, not least in the aftermath of the medieval Islamic invasion. Maybe you mean Nepalese? Siddartha himself was from thereabouts, almost. The auld Pali roots and all that jazz, aye? Sri Lanka and Thailand are the closest modern things to the Pali root, these days. Anyhow, I do actually see "Monkey" as a folk-Buddhist thing, regardless! ;-) yours, aye, steve sweeney-turner, ba (hons), pg.dip, phd ("suibhne an seingbhlen-sa") ty arianrhod, strathbrock, silicon glen, scotland http://www.cyberscotia.com "Mayst thou go, O Suibhne, in madness, without respite!" - - St. Ronan to Suibhne Geilt, in *Buile Suibhne*, C12th - --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
