I've created a new "The day I met Monkey's English voice!" page on my web site: http://www.monkeyheaven.com/daymetmonkeysenglishvoice.html In addition to including a copy of my account, it also includes lots of photos from the day. Additions to the account - ----------------------------------- I've had feedback from various people who were at the dubbing session (plus there's a few things I've remembered), giving me extra information to add to my account (I'll merge this new information in the page soon): 1) The two competition winners who came along to the session were Martin Lau and Rob Walton. 2) On the handwritten dialogue band, David had to speak the words as they crossed a "shadow line" near the left, not as they fell off the left. If you think about it, it would make it much more challenging to read words as they're already disappearing... 3) David Collings said that when he worked on the dubbing first time around in the late 1970s, it was a little side project he squeezed in between "proper" work! 4) One minor technical point - I *thought* I saw a script stand in front of the mic, so I think actors can look at a script if required. 5) Feedback from Martin Lau: "Anyway, I think the best part for me was seeing the playback immediately after David had recorded some lines - it was amazing to think that those words had just been recorded by an actor, because they now belonged totally to the character of Monkey. He had been given a voice right in front of us." 6) The line on the left of the screen in the business is known as the 'CURSOR' 7) The dubbing session, the whole setup, felt very informal. 8) Near where I was sitting, at one side of the studio, there was a pile of the English scripts for the 13 unseen episodes. As lines are dubbed in each episode, George ticks them off on the script, so that he has a record of exactly which lines have been recorded, and which are still outstanding. 9) Although the dialogue band is generally used for providing the dialogue for the actor to read, apparently, for 2 of the unseen episodes, actual scripts were used (but apparently that's a long story, so I don't know the exact reason why) 10) David Collings is very quick, and spent just 8 days or so dubbing Monkey's voice on all 13 unseen episodes! I've just received this fascinating biography of George Roubicek, the director of the 2004 Monkey dubbing (and also the guy who wrote the English adaptation): George Roubicek biography - ------------------------------------- As an actor George has notched up appearances in several cult television shows, notably playing the heroic Holderman opposite Patrick Troughton in Doctor Who: The Tomb of the Cybermen and featuring in two episodes of The Avengers, 'The White Dwarf' and 'Invasion of the Earthmen'. His many film appearances include the Richard Widmark nautical adventure The Bedford Incident, The One That Got Away and the feature film version of Dad's Army. He appeared alongside two James Bonds; Sean Connery in You Only Live Twice and Roger Moore in The Spy Who Loved Me, as well as Michael Caine in the Harry Palmer romp Billion Dollar Brain and the classic The Dirty Dozen. An experience director he is currently involved in a new animation project for television.
