After seeing a Japanese TV show today, in Tokyo, containing a segment covering the revival of Monkey in the UK, and featuring my web site (!), Monkey fans Andrew and Saori in Tokyo, sent me an email containing lots of new information about Tonpei Hidari, the actor who played Pigsy in season two of Monkey. Previously, I thought he'd just disappeared from Japanese TV, and was unheard of these days - how wrong I was! Here's the information they sent me: - -- Hi there, I was watching TV (in Tokyo) with my wife today and a segment on a show came up that was covering the revival of Monkey Magic in the UK. Well, me being a huge fan of the show I thought I might take a look at your website after learning about it via the show. I noticed that some of the info was incomplete so I went- a-searching for Japanese sites that had info. My wife also filled me in on some of the actors' activities. Here is a bombshell for all of the British Tonpei Hidari fans out there he is alive and well and very much still in show biz. In fact he was in a celebrity golf tournament/ on TV just today! He is regularly on TV. I also managed to find a complete listing of what Tonpei has done since his debut in 1961. As well as being on TV he released a single in 1973 called "Tonpei no Hey you Blues" or translated: "Tonpei's Hey you blues". If you go to http://www5.tok2.com/home/kotobuki/ you can check it out. He also released a single 27 years later called "Ningen te nandaro" or translated: "What are humans?". These days he spends most of his time doing talk shows, but has featured in comedies such as "Oedo degozaru" or translated "Tokyo". Oedo is the old name for Tokyo and degozaru is an old word for representing existance, which has been shortened to desu. There was also a murder mystery that he was in as well." They also sent me the URL to Tonpei Hidari's timeline on JMDB (Japanese Movie Database, I'm guessing): http://www.jmdb.ne.jp/person/p0129410.htm It's in Japanese, of course. You can view an English translation of this page courtesy of Excite.co.jp's superb English translation service: http://www.excite.co.jp/world/url/?wb_url=http://www.jmdb.ne.jp/person/p0129410.htm&wb_lp=JAEN&wb_dis=2 - -- So, for the first time since I created it, I've added this news to my Tonpei Hidari tribute page: http://www.monkeyheaven.com/tonpei.html Howell _________________________________________________________________ Overloaded with spam?
