Over the course of the first series (26 episodes) we followed the adventures of Monkey, the priest Tripitaka (a male character, played and voiced by women), Sandy, Pigsy and Horse as they head towards India to fetch back the Holy Scriptures. Both Sandy and Pigsy were former officials in Heaven who were thrown out and altered after Monkey had run riot there. He was imprisoned in rock to be taught patience until the Tripitaka came along to free him with the quest. Horse was once a dragon who was set free by Monkey and changed to help them all on their mission. Monkey would often take charge and spend most of his time bitching at and about Sandy but more often Pigsy. Monkey also had the ability to see through monsters disguised as humans and attack them, much to the disgust of the others until he was proved right. Tripitaka kept Monkey in check by the gold circlet that would cause headaches when Tripitaka prayed. Sandy would often be the cautious one, advising against anything rash, while Pigsy would think with his stomach and have an eye for the ladies - both would get him into trouble. Each episode would contain what we thought were pearls of wisdom, but none of it was serious Buddhist teaching, for instance: How long must a fool who misses the way wander through his many lives? Two years after the first series started production, the second went before the cameras. This time the humour was more slapstick and other changes were also evident. Pigsy was played by a different actor, Horse now had the skill to turn into a human and Monkey would grow a moustache at will. This second batch of 13 episodes are a decided letdown compared to what had gone before. Although still set in ancient China there were too many references to the then present day. Overall, Monkey, was a very enjoyable romp with plenty of staged action sequences and good (occasionally dodgy) model work. The entire set of 39 episodes is now available on video from those nice people at Fabulous Films. - --- Howell _________________________________________________________________ Express yourself with cool emoticons http://www.msn.co.uk/messenger - --------------------------------------------------------------------- + List guidelines: http://www.monkeyheaven.com/guidelines.html + To unsubscribe, send an email to: majordomo@valinor.eldar.org with 'unsubscribe monkey' in the body of your message + Need help?
