Re: [monkey] [OT] The Water Margin DVDs ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sun, 02 Feb 2003 12:07:12 +0000 From: "Howell Parry" Subject: [monkey] Monkey fever grips the UK! First of all, note that Monkey episode 3 - "The Great Journey Begins" will be shown on Thursday night on Channel 4 at 12.45am (i.e. 45 minutes after midnight on Thursday night). For viewers in Wales, episode 2 will be on S4C at 1.00am after midnight on *Wednesday* night (so they're 6 days behind Channel 4). In the current "Heat" magazine (1st Feb), there's a section where they have the "Top 10 TV Shows" over the coming week... below this section, they have "and the worst TV show" - and it's Monkey... there's a photo of Monkey, and beneath it, it says something "So bad it's good? Or just plain bad? You decide..." Here's where everything gets crazy - here's the news that's currently blowing my mind: - - Monkey episode 1 attracted 1/4 milllion viewers (in spite of the fact it was shown at 12.35am - - Monkey episode 2 got DOUBLE that - it attracted 1/2 million viewers - - If this continues, Channel 4 will aalmost certainly buy the remaining 39 episodes and will screen them, plus they may also move Monkey to a better timeslot. By the way, on the Friday after the 1st Monkey episode, my web site reached its 6-year high number of visitors... after the 2nd Monkey episode, this was exceeded - 1149 visited last Friday. A common theme I'm noticing in the discussions about Monkey in the web forums is that everyone's big big worry about Monkey is: "I watched it as a kid, and loved it. I'm wary of watching it now, as it'll probably be really crap, like The Fall Guy and other shows." On the whole, the feedback from people is along the lines: "I loved it as a kid, and I thought it must be just because I was a kid... the real reason is because the show is ACE, and as an adult it's EVEN BETTER." So I think some crucial messages to get across in the promotion of the TV rerun and also the DVDs and videos, are things like: (a) "Monkey - great to watch as a kid, EVEN BETTER as an adult." (b) "Monkey isn't just for kids, it's for adults, it's a show that all generations can enjoy." (c) "Lots of TV shows you saw as a kid turn out to be crap when you watch them as an adult. Monkey is an exception, it works on many levels, and is MUCH MORE ENJOYABLE as an adult. Don't believe me? Watch it, and see for yourself... you'll be hooked again, just as you were all those years ago." (d) "Even better than you remember it." (e) "Really stands the test of time." Feel free to use these, and spread the word about the Monkey rerun to everyone you know - keep spreading the word!!! Other news - ----------- 1) Fabulous Films have floor standing display units going into stores as we speak to promote the UK Monkey DVDs. They feature a full size Monkey.......! They may be a few spare for fans, and would cost #70 inc postage. Let me know ASAP if you'd like one - it's a case of first-come, first-served, assuming that they have some spares left over. I've suggested that one of the floor standing units should be sent to "FAB Cafe" in Manchester - it's a cult TV / film themed bar, which collects memorabilia - they currently have no Monkey memorabilia, and this would be superb promotion. There's also a "FAB Cafe" in Leeds now - please, can the fans on the mailing list who live in Leeds let me know if you've been to this one? Is it popular? Would it be worth me asking for a lifesize Monkey cutout for them too? 2) Fabulous Films have a 2 week flyposting campaign again for the first 2 weeks in February in London 3) There's a full page advert in the February issue of Bizarre 4) Fabulous Films are sponsoring a Millwall match against Sheffield Wednesday on March 22nd. All 4 Monkey characters are going to walk out on the pitch at kick off and have a picture taken with the teams. They are sponsoring the match ball, so they will have advertising on the programme cover and inside. They are letting as much press know as possible. Plus - I've been asked if I'd like to dress up as one of the characters for this.. I've chosen to be Pigsy, so will be appearing on a football pitch in front of a possible 60,000 football fans I guess!!!! 5) About the Monkey Magic remix project - here's the latest info: "We won't remix Gandhara and we won't be using the intro 'Birth of the Odyssey'. We're going to ask Ian Astbury from 'THE CULT' so you may get your rock remix yet!! I will keep you informed of the remixes as they start to come in. I have approached Fatboy Slim, Chemical Brothers and they are busy. I am waiting to hear back from Mint Royale, Death In Vegas, Soulwax and a few others." - - Don't forget: If you have any otherr comments / ideas / suggestions for the remix, send to me as soon as possible! Howell PS Thanks to all the fans who've contacted me re: the Monkey / Water Margin sticker campaign.. wasn't expecting such a big response (you're normally all so quiet!!). Please note that I've passed on all your address details to Fabulous Films, so expect a batch of stickers in the post very soon. If you don't receive any in the next week or so, please contact me again, and I will chase it up. - - Also, if anyone else would like to get involved in the sticker campaign, just drop me an email with your postal address. Please note - since these stickers are plugging the UK Monkey DVD release, this 'offer' is only applicable to UK Monkey fans (sorry to Fox and any other Australian fans who'd like these stickers - my fault, I should have mentioned this in my first email). _________________________________________________________________ Overloaded with spam? Although there are some small web sites out there dedicated to "The Water Margin", would anyone be interested in producing a "supersite" dedicated to "The Water Margin"? Although I've never watched it myself, it sounds like it's definitely worthy of a mega website for fans to come together and talk about all things related to The Water Margin.
