The release will be huge now with a major media assault planned. They are also taking on The Water Margin. Everything will go out as a joint venture. The releases will change slightly, the first 2 DVDs will come out on April 22nd then probably monthly afterwards. All the catalogue numbers and barcodes will change from what I've stated on my web site. This deal will put the videos / DVDs of both "Monkey" and "The Water Margin" in more shops, and much more in the public eye. It looks like *everyone* is going to hear about the UK Monkey DVDs when they come out in April. Ishiyama says he was inspired as a child watching the TV drama Saiyuuki (shown as "Monkey" in the west). His dream is to play the monkey god Songoku, played by actor Sakai Masaaki in the TV show. He attended an opera school in Beijing for four years from 1993 before entering the Academy of Chinese Traditional Opera. The severe training include 40-minute handstands and extreme gymnastics. - -- Howell _________________________________________________________________ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx - --------------------------------------------------------------------- + List guidelines: http://www.monkeyheaven.com/guidelines.html + List archives: http://archive.monkeyheaven.com/ User name: greatsage Password: masaaki + To unsubscribe, send an email to: majordomo@valinor.eldar.org with 'unsubscribe monkey' in the body of your message + Need help? These stars, which were listed on the NTV web site for "MONKEY (ORIGINAL SERIES)", are in reality the stars of a completely different NTV show called "Food Fight"!? Anyway, my Japanese friend has sent me some great information about 2 "Monkey" remakes made by NTV, and also a great "puppet show" version from the 1970s... - --- 1) 1993 - Anniversary of NTV 40 years special 2 hour drama Monkey: Masahiro Motoki Tripitaka: Rie Miyazawa Buddha: Kaoru Yachigusa (who coincidentally is a star of the "Food Fight" show mentioned earlier) See a photo from it halfway down this page (and some information in Japanese): http://kyoto.cool.ne.jp/ichimura/drama93/drama93-01.htm 2) 1994 - TV show program, 17 stories (possibly, the first episode was 2 hours long) Maybe the 1993 version got good ratings, so they decided to make this version. Monkey: Toshiyuki Karasawa Tripitaka: Riho Makise See a photo from it near the bottom of this page (and some information in Japanese): http://kyoto.cool.ne.jp/ichimura/drama94/drama94-01.htm Japanese information about it on this page (no pictures): http://www3.justnet.ne.jp/~a_matsu/saiyu94.HTM Both of these were made by NTV. They use high quality computer graphics, and the 4 main characters were acted by very popular actors and actresses of the time. "But that is too high quality. I felt they haven't original-show's familiar and historical good old taste when I watched it." 3) Most famous "other Saiyuki" ("Saiyuki" = "Journey To The West" in Japanese) is "Tobe! Songoku" (means "Fly! Monkey"). http://www.spice.or.jp/~knight55/songoku.htm http://www.usiwakamaru.or.jp/~habuchi/drifters/etc/songo.html http://www.geocities.co.jp/Hollywood-Miyuki/7287/w/drif.html It was shown in 1977 on TBS-TV company. The show was doll-show and the characters face (doll's face) models were "The drifters". Characters' voices too. The drifters were a very popular comedy group in Japan and now, each members are popular as comedian, actor and musician. Telling about their popularity, most big story was that when The Beatles came to Japan, they played support. It's such a prestigous thing then because all young people were excited about "Beatles Coming!" in June 1966. Every Japanese rock band were hoped to played support. It was such an honourable thing. This show was so comical and cute taste. The story didn't stick strictly with the Chinese Saiyuki story. The stories were original comedy taste and arranged like the drifters's comedy taste. - --- Many thanks to my Japanese friend for all this great information. It's great finally to see what the Monkey remake shows looked like. I like the look of the 1993 show, but not the 1994 show, and I think the puppet show version looks hilarious!
