Hi Sandy, Thanks for this - but I don't think this is it. Whenever someone clicks on a link, either from a: - - regular web page - - web page containing search engine results The URL of that page gets sent as the "referral URL", that I see in my access logs. However, I got hundreds of hits, mostly with no "referral URL" - indicating that it didn't come from search engine results or a link from a web page. This usually indicates one of the following - The web site visitor has: 1) Typed in the URL of the web site - he/she may have seen it printed in a newspaper, magazine, or on a Monkey video cassette label 2) Clicked on a link in an (non-webmail, e.g. Outlook, Netscape) email message - this could include an update notification from NetMind (URL-Minder) 3) Selected it from their Favorites / Bookmarks list Given the sudden surge in "non-referred" hits, I'm suspecting (1). They're strictly limited edition - only 4000 editions of each Monkey video should contain a postcard. I think Fabulous Films should have made this clearer, perhaps on each postcard, as I believe they're been _inundated_ with complaints from people who've bought videos that haven't contained a postcard. >Do you know whether it's possible to order the missing cards >from Fabulous Films? Note that, to do this, after clicking Reply, you'll need to change the "To" address manually to the person's email address. - - By default, replies are automatically addressed to the mailing list address, to encourage discussions on the mailing list. Always check the "To" address before hitting Send, to see whether your reply is addressed directly to the sender or to the mailing list. Also, I've added an extra bit to the end of the following "Note": - -- If your message bounces from the mailing list server for any of the above reasons, please note that I will edit your message to remove the problemmatic comment (e.g. HTML tags, MIME codes, old headers and footers), and I will approve it and send it on to the mailing list on your behalf, so you don't need to resend it. However, to make my job easier :-) - and to ensure that your message goes to the list as soon as possible without delay, please observe the above guidelines. - -- Extra bit: - ----------- In some cases, if messages sent by a particular person bounce on a regular basis, I may choose to inform the person of the problem, and ask them to resend their message, after fixing the problem in their message. You'll find the full list of mailing list guidelines on this page: http://www.geocities.com/saiyuuki/guidelines.html (for easy access, I've added this URL to the footer at the end of each mailing list message, and also at the end of the Monkey Digest) Howell _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. - -------------------------------------------------------------------- + List guidelines: http://www.geocities.com/saiyuuki/guidelines.html + To unsubscribe, send an email to: majordomo@valinor.eldar.org with 'unsubscribe monkey' in the body of your message + Need help? Thanks for the ideas... I'd thought of some of these before, but the following ones were good ideas that I'd not thought of: - - Japanese version of the episodes, with subtitles - - DVD-Audio tracks of songs from the show, accompanying stills from the show - - PC_Friendly (DVD player application) - - Getting Burt Kwouk to read the episode synopses (!) :) Here's a list of all the ideas that I brainstormed for the Monkey DVD extras a few months ago: DVD EXTRAS - EXTRA VIDEO FOOTAGE - --------------------------------- 1) The *ULTIMATE* extra There's 13 Monkey episodes that were never dubbed into English (i.e. 52 episodes were made in total), and have never been seen outside Japan. These are episodes 29,30,31,32,33,34,35,40,45,48,49,50,51 You'll find more information about these episodes on this page on my web site: http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Towers/8153/undubbedepisodes.html Since there'll be 13 Monkey DVDs (3 per DVD), the *ULTIMATE* extra would be if each DVD included 1 "undubbed" / "missing" Monkey episode. 2) BBC Monkey mini-feature (around 4 - 5 minutes long) from their "I Love The Seventies: 1979". 3) Outtakes 4) Behind-the-scenes ("the making of") footage 5) Original TV trailers for "Monkey" (both the Japanese NTV trailer and the BBC trailer) 6) Clips from the original Japanese version of Monkey, for example: - - The opening intro sequence to season 1 in Japanese - - The opening intro sequence to season 2 in Japanese - - Various clips to satisfy Monkey fans' curiosity - what did the Japanese actors' original voices sound like? (these clips could be of classic moments from the series - ones that fans would recognise immediately) 7) Music promos of songs from Monkey performed by the Japanese band Godiego: - - Monkey Magic (i.e. the opening song in both seasons of Monkey) - - Gandhara (i.e. the closing song in season 1 of Monkey) - - Holy and Bright (i.e. the closing song in season 2 of Monkey) - - Other songs from Monkey NOTE: You can download a 9MB QuickTime movie clip of Godiego performing "Monkey Magic" live from here: http://homepage.mac.com/monkeymusic/m_magic.mov 8) "Gandhara" karaoke clip from Australia's ABC "Recovery" show (shown in 1999) - very funny! You can download a 2MB RealMedia movie clip of this karaoke clip from this web page: http://members.tripod.com/aitchb/ 9) NTV's Monkey special. After Monkey season 1 was shown in Japan in 1978/1979, public demand was so huge that they put together a 1 or 2 hour TV special featuring the best bits from the series. Obviously, this would be in Japanese, but it would still be good to watch. 10) Clips from NTV's 1994 Monkey remake show. Here's the info I have on this remake: "New Monkey" was made by the same TV company as "Monkey" (NTV). "Monkey" is the most popular TV show that NTV ever made, so to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the channel, they made a new 1990s series of Monkey, a remake of the original series. It featured the newest special effects and computer graphics, and included a completely new cast. It only ran for 1 season, and was unpopular (I guess it couldn't beat the original series!). DVD EXTRAS - OTHER - ------------------- 11) Photo gallery 12) English script - could include 3 scripts on each DVD, corresponding to the 3 episodes on each DVD. I've not seen this personally, but apparently some DVD movies include the movie screenplay, in a DVD-viewable form (so you can page through it on your DVD player without needing to use a PC) 13) Conceptual art 14) Storyboards 15) "Web site" pages in DVD-viewable form, e.g.: - - Character descriptions - - Episode synopses - - Narrator quotes - - Song lyrics (I have all these on my site!) - - Cast biographies - - Trivia If you'd like to see what Siren Entertainment have done for the Australian Monkey DVD release, you can view screens from the DVD on their MONKEY web site: http://www.monkeyvideo.com.au Here's my ideas for promotional extras / packaging: 1) Omit the exclamation mark ("!") from all the Monkey DVD packaging (including the Monkey logo) (i.e. so it's Monkey instead of Monkey!) Fabulous Films made a mistake on the videos - I think they thought that since my site is called Monkey!, then it followed on that the show was called Monkey! - strictly speaking, there's no "!" at the end of the show title (whenever I see someone call the show Monkey! it winds me up... sad, I know!) 2) To make the DVDs more desirable, produce some promotional items (13 of them, 1 for each DVD) to accompany the Monkey DVDs (like the postcards with the Monkey videos). Some ideas: - - Photograph stills / prints (instead of postcards - they've already been done - so nice to do something original for the DVDs) - - Stickers / sticker-postcards (i.e. you peel off the interior of the postcard and stick it somewhere) - - Badges - - Collector cards (e.g. each one shows a picture of one of the characters, and beneath it, some trivia about the character - a bit like a "trump card" in "top trumps") - - Jigsaw (each box includes a piece of a 13-piece jigsaw depicting all the characters from the show) However - to keep everyone happy, I'd suggest not making these any of these limited edition - to give everyone the opportunity to collect the whole lot, include them in every DVD :) 3) Promotional items to send away for (i.e. as with the posters and T-shirts that accompanied the Monkey video release): - - Mugs - - Keyrings - - Photograph stills / prints - - Complete set of postcards - - Soundtrack CDs (they could import a batch of Godiego's "Magic Monkey" CDs from Japan, and sell them on, making a small profit on each) My ideas for Monkey extras are all very "idealistic" - and in reality, as Warren pointed - Fabulous Films would have to pay out for extra licensing agreements for many of these extras - I really wish they would though - even if it pushed the DVD price up a bit, it'd be worth it in my opinion, to make them all the more collectable - and it might even encourage Australian / New Zealand Monkey fans to buy the UK DVDs too, in addition to the ones they already have, so that they can get all the great extras :) Does anyone have any more ideas?
