After years of speculation, I've just received a concrete answer from a Monkey fan in Japan, telling me exactly why Toshiyuki Nishida (Pigsy) left Monkey, and was replaced by Tonpei Hidari. Here's the information... - --- At first, Saiyuuki(Monkey) 1st season was made for 25th anniversary drama of "Nihon-TV". ***Nihon=Japan ***Nihon-TV is one of Japanese private management TV company. They had not planned for Saiyuuki becoming such a long drama and also had not planned to make 2nd season. (1st season was started at 1978. And 2nd season was started at 1979.) But after the program was on, it got so big popularity against their expectation. After then, they decided to make 2nd season of Saiyuuki. But after 1st season,Nishida-san had offered a big drama project by same TV company. And that was big chance for him because it was his 1st lead-act drama. The drama's name is "Ikenaka Genta 80kg". ("Ikenaka Genta" is main character's name. 80kg means "fat guy". It was very hart-warming familiy drama.) "Ikenaka Genta 80kg" was started at 1980. That made big success for Nishida-san. After that, his success story as an actor was started. Here's another reason: Nishida-san acted the "pig-charactor" very well. But on the other hand, he got much "pig-image" with saiyuuki's Hakkai mumumu...like Sean Connery=James Bond.) (Hakkai is Japanese "pigsy") I guess, he and his management people was afraid that. Now, Nishida-san is one of Japan's big seasoned actor and he joins many big drama and movie projects. He became the biggest actor out of Saiyuuki's cast. If Natsume-san was alive now, I guess she would also have become a big actress too. - --- Howell _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. - --------------------------------------------------------------- + To unsubscribe, send an email to: majordomo@valinor.eldar.org with 'unsubscribe monkey' in the body of your message + Need help? Where's the beef? Monkey is the main character of the Japanese TV show "Monkey". This mailing list is for fans of "Monkey" to discuss all aspects of it, including the original Chinese story ("Hsi Yu Chi" = "Journey To The West" in English) on which "Monkey" was based. To my knowledge, "Monkey" has been shown mainly in Japan, Australia, UK, New Zealand - there's talk about it having been shown in other countries such as South Africa. As far as I'm aware, it's never been shown in the USA or Canada. Doesn't "Hakkai" mean "Eight Prohibitions"? Since "Goku" means "Awakened to Emptiness" and all. Oh well. I don't know diddlysquat on Japanese names, except for the obvious, like Hikaru.
