First up, I'm trying to work out a word in the second episode of the first series. It's the bit where the night demon has stolen the holy cloak from the monk who's stolen it from Tripitaka, and has gone back to his cave. After a brief fight he retreats into the cave and Monkey pounds on the door saying "come back here you coward, sissy, poofter ... L-something". Sounds like limoo. Does this mean anything to anyone ? Second question, does anyone have any thoughts on why the whole Monkey story seems to have so much popular resonance in so many different cultures as it does, and being one also which has stood the passing of time and spanned religious schools of thought ? I've always thought the story by Wu was meant to have been a sort of a satire of chinese political and religious regimes at the time - so it makes its durability more interesting and suggests an interesting shift in the emphasis pasing generations have placed on it ? Or was Monkey in fact around before this ? Thanks for any comments.
