He based it on fantasy and adventure, as well as some comedy. But, as well, he based it on Chinese mythology, including the character Monkey. Check it out. I've only read one in the series, but all Monkey's powers are there: creating mini-monkeys from hairs, turning to different elements and creatures. Anybody got any more info? Seeyas - --- Does anyone have any more info on these books? His first book was Swiftwater, published in 1973. It was a science fiction novel for older children. My sister read it at the time, but I have not got around to reading any of his books myself, although I would like to; he seems to be a good writer. Dragon of the Lost Sea was his fifth book, published in 1982. Its plot is summarized thus on the web (at http://www.powells.com/biblio/5800-6000/0064402274.html): Shimmer, a renegade dragon princess, tries to redeem herself by capturing a witch with the help of a human boy. There's an interview with Yep at: http://teacher.scholastic.com/authorsandbooks/authors/yep/tscript.htm In the interview Yep says: I once did a fantasy novel that was like a Narnia book. It had gone through seven drafts, and I thought it was ready. But in the seventh draft, I wrote about a dragon and her pet boy. They were such vivid characters that I tore up the first six drafts and started all over. It turned into a novel called Dragon of the Lost Sea, and there ended up being three more books about the adventures of that dragon and her boy. Here are two questions from that interview, and Yep's replies: Interviewer: What is the importance of the word dragon in your books? Yep: I love dragons. Dragons in Chinese mythology bring rain, so they're symbols of fertility. But they've also come to have a deeper meaning for me. They're symbols of my own creativity. Sometimes the dragon takes me where she wants to go rather than where I want to go. I think there's a dragon inside each of us. In fact, my wife hates it when I'm doing a dragon book, because I turn very dragonish. Interviewer: Are you planning to write any science fiction books for children or for grownups? Yep: I'm planning to write a new series of fantasy books with the Monkey King and more dragons - and maybe find a girlfriend for Thorn. The four books in the series are: Dragon of the Lost Sea, Harper & Row, 1982. Dragon Steel, Harper & Row, 1985. Dragon Cauldron, HarperCollins, 1991. Dragon War, HarperCollins, 1992. Note that Yep has written three other books with the word Dragon in the title, but they are not related to this series. The first two of these are non-fantasies set in the U.S.A. The third is a fantasy novel set in China. Dragonwings, Harper & Row, 1975. (early 20th century, San Francisco) Dragon's Gate, HarperCollins, 1993. (late 19th century, Sierra Mountains) Dragon Prince, HarperCollins, 1996. (Chinese version of Beauty and the Beast) - --------------- Whilst I was gathering the above details about Laurence Yep and his books, I stumbled across a website containing a story called "Monkey: A Superhero Tale of China". It is retold by Aaron Shepard, and carries the dedication "For Kuan Yin".
