There were people commenting things like "Oh my god, Look Monkey" and "Hey, theres Pigsy!" It was great to see sooo much interest. Now if they all bought a copy instead of just watching it in the shop, It'd be No.1 for sure! - --- Howell ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com - --------------------------------------------------------------- + To unsubscribe, send an email to: majordomo@valinor.eldar.org with 'unsubscribe monkey' in the body of your message + Need help? Then along came the mischievous great sage Monkey, with Pigsy, Sandy and his magic wishing staff. A generation was entranced. Made in Japan, 39 episodes of Monkey were broadcast here in the early '80s. Dubbed into English with added humour and combined with Buddhist philosophy, rampant disco and acrobatic battles, they were a tonic for the troops. And I'll fancy many of us, if we're honest, had the hots for Tripitaka - "boy" priest my arse, the cheeky minx. The entire collection gets a re-release this year, beginning with the first six episodes and our hero's fall from Heaven after draining the weasel on Buddha's hand. Spectacular. 9/10 CHAS CHANDLER - --- Howell ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com - --------------------------------------------------------------- + To unsubscribe, send an email to: majordomo@valinor.eldar.org with 'unsubscribe monkey' in the body of your message + Need help? It's been given 4/5 - the only "video to buy" which beats it with a full 5/5 is the movie "The Conversation" (Francis Ford Coppola). - --- Monkey! Volumes 1 to 4 (Fabulous Films, £12.99 each) 4/5 This just in: Ian Brown bases entire career on early-Eighties kids' TV character. Sorry, Brown, but the evidence is compelling: the formless haircut, the baggy clothes, the pseudo-mystic utterances, the threats of violence, the towering self-belief, even the three erstwhile "band members", one of whom wears a floppy white hat. We rest our case: Ian Brown, Monkey plagiarist. But then, who can blame him? In a post-punk golden era for kids' TV that gave us TISWAS and Grange Hill's smack period, Monkey was the most anarchic of the lot. What other children's programme would have its hero unwittingly fouling Buddha's fingers with graffiti and p*ss? Where else was a 10-year-old supposed to go for kung-fu fighting, appalling sub-Doctor Who special effects and entirely inappropriate disco interludes? These videos (three episodes per tape) are worth more than mere nostalgia, though. Whereas most fondly recalled shows turn out to be grindingly dull when you actually sit down and watch them, Monkey makes even more sense seen through adult eyes. As adults, we can interpret Monkey's troubled relationship with his magic wishing staff ("Come on, grow large, grow large") in strictly Freudian terms. As adults, we can savour the narrator's inept Confucian comments ("Even a starving camel is bigger than a horse") as a formative influence on Alan Partridge. As adults, we can fully appreciate the ahh-so dubbing, hugely insulting to Chinese people everywhere, but nonetheless consistent with the great British tradition of silly voices (see Goons, The). All this is thanks to David Weir, of course. He took a minor Japanese adventure series, based on an ancient Buddhist pilgrim text, and dubbed it into English for a snot-nosed playground audience. Dubbed it, that is, under the influence of several stiff drinks, if the raucous banter of Monkey, Tripitaka, Piggsy and Sandy was any reflection of his state of mind. Bridging the gap between The Benny Hill Show and The Young Ones, Monkey was zoo TV with a thousand-year heritage. Arguably, it even made the world a better place, by making satori a viable alternative to sniffing glue. Now, can Pokemon make the same claim? Can it f*ck.
