Send an email to: owner-monkey@valinor.eldar.org - --------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Mar 2000 08:41:37 GMT From: "Howell Parry" Subject: [monkey] Original Japanese Monkey episodes! My Japanese friend has recently sent me recordings of the first 26 episodes of Monkey (i.e. season 1) from Japanese cable TV, split across 4 video tapes, recorded in NTSC EP (i.e. the half-speed NTSC mode). These episodes are in their original Japanese undubbed form (plus there's no English subtitles). Note that these DO NOT include the 13 episodes which were never dubbed into English. These 26 episodes have all been dubbed into English. It's great to see Monkey in its original form, and to hear all the actors' original voices. It's amazing how similar the dubbed voices are to the original ones. Even though I understand very little of the Japanese dialogue (apart from 'san-sen', 'roku-sen', 'ku-sen' - 3000, 6000, 9000 when talking about the heavenly peaches in episode 1), it's totally addictive viewing. Seeing the episodes as they were originally made really adds that little bit extra to them all - the taunting during the fights etc. Here's some differences I've spotted between the Japanese and English versions of Monkey: 1) The opening titles are slightly different... before 'our opening titles' start, there's a few seconds showing a still photo while playing 'Monkey Magic'. 2) When Monkey pops out of the stone egg, it shows a close-up of him, and he growls! (note: it's not Masaaki Sakai dressed as him - it's someone else in a monkey costume) 3) Before you see the pictures of all the cast, the titles are rearranged slightly 4) During each episode, when you see a character or item for the first time, a Japanese caption appears, introducing the character. As well as introducing each character, captions also appear for Monkey's cloud, and his wishing staff. I suspect this is common practice in Japanese TV shows. Here's the listings for the 4 tapes I have (note that, as a bonus, my friend has recorded other Monkey-related programmes at the end of tapes 2 and 4): - -------- Tape 1 [Total length: 6 hours, 10 minutes] - ------------------------------------------ Episodes 1 - 8 [DURATION: 6 hours, 10 minutes] Tape 2 [Total length: 5 hours, 30 minutes] - ------------------------------------------ Episodes 9 - 13 [DURATION: 3 hours, 51 minutes] Kohaku 1999: Godiego [DURATION: 1 hour 31 minutes] Shows the full live performance of Godiego during 'Kohaku', the end-of-year show on Japanese TV. As well as performing songs from their new album, they play lots of old favourites, including 'Monkey Magic', 'Gandhara' and 'Holy and Bright'. There's also old footage showing them playing these Monkey songs 20 years ago when they were first released. Godiego: "Every Child Has A Beautiful Name" [DURATION: 4 minutes] A really _big_ performance by Godiego - with lots of children on stage around them. This may be from 'Kohaku' too. Kohaku 1999: Masaaki Sakai live! [DURATION: 4 minutes] Masaaki Sakai performs a Spiders song "Yei Yei" (pronounced "Yeah Yeah"). Most of this song is in English, and there's subtitles during it, so you can sing along. Great performance (as always) by Masaaki. Tape 3 [Total length: 6 hours, 11 minutes] - ------------------------------------------ Episodes 14 - 21 [DURATION: 6 hours, 11 minutes] Tape 4 [Total length: 4 hours, 47 minutes] - ------------------------------------------ Episodes 22 - 26 [DURATION: 3 hours, 50 minutes] Sakai's amazing performances [DURATION: 12 minutes] TV show featuring Masaaki Sakai chatting with 3 men in a studio, discussing his amazing performances over the years. Includes clips of 5 of his amazing performances: 1986 - He's climbing around and hanging off some scaffolding (slapstick humour sketch) 1992 - He pulls a tablecloth from a fully-laid table 1991 - Wearing a brown wig, he's dressed as a conductor conducting an orchestra, and he's falling all over the place (his feet are attached to a big 'bean bag' type thing). This _has_ to be seen! 1994 - He throws playing cards at things, and shows off his accuracy. He lodges one in a melon, cuts a cigarette in two with another, and makes another one fly through the flame on a candle, and puts it out. 1997 - Performs some truly amazing balancing acts, standing on various planks on top of one another on top of a cylinder which is rolling all over the place (this _has_ to be seen too!) At the end of the show, one of the men in the studio starts singing Masaaki's hit song "Saraba, koibito" to him.. (since it starts with "Sayonara..."). Everyone has a good laugh about it. Tiny clip of Masaaki Sakai wishing Japan a happy new year on Kohaku [DURATION: About 5 seconds] Weird show, with a traditionally-dressed man pointing at numbers on a chart. I suspect they're years, and he's talking about Japanese history, as an introduction for... Period drama TV show starring Toshiyuki Nishida [DURATION: 45 minutes] - -------- I'd like to make these tapes available to everyone on the mailing list. 1) If you live in Australia, UK or New Zealand - - You'll need PAL copies of these tapes. I've found a cheap conversion place that will make PAL masters from my NTSC tapes, and I'll then run off copies for everyone who's interested. 2) If you live in the USA, Canada or Japan - - You'll need NTSC copies of these tapes. I've found a reasonably-priced place that will make NTSC duplicates of them. So if you're interested in getting copies of any / all of these tapes, please send me an email directly to me at: parryh@hotmail.com stating: - - Which tape(s) you're interested in - - Which country you're in (so I can find out whether you need PAL or NTSC copies) It doesn't matter where in the world you are - if you'd like copies of these tapes, I'll get them done for you. Note that I'm planning to make NTSC EP and PAL LP copies of these tapes, so you can get 6 - 8 hours on each video tape. If you need NTSC SP or PAL SP copies (i.e. just 3 - 4 hours per video tape), let me know, and I'll split them across two tapes for you in SP.
