A while ago, someone gave me 2 video tapes (in PAL format) of various Masaaki Sakai TV shows recorded from Japanese TV. Here's what's on the two tapes: Masaaki Sakai tape 1 - --------------------- (1) 00:00 Aru Aru [DURATION: 1 hour] A show he does about things that are good for your health. In this show, the topic was how good vinegar is for health (the type of vinegar most commonly used in Japan is rice vinegar which has rather yellowish colour). First 10 minutes: perfect quality 10 - 45 minutes: unwatchable and messed-up 45 minutes - 1 hour: watchable, but shaky picture (2) 01:00 Tokugawa Yoshinobu (NHK) [DURATION: 45 minutes] A Japanese historical drama, in which all the men have partly-shaven heads and look very weird. NHK is a national network, sort of like the BBC. The story is set sometime in the mid-19th century. At that time Japan started trading with overseas for the first time in about 300 years. New things came into Japan (in one episode the spreading of the newly-imported disease cholera is depicted) and the society became unstable. There were two parties: one comprised advocates of the feudal government of the time and the other was against it and thinking of establishing a new government. (3) 01:45 Here's The Kitchen [DURATION: 30 minutes] Here's the Kitchen! ('Chuubou desuyo!' in Japanese) (TBS) His weekly/daily (?) comedy cookery show. This cookery entertainment programme is hosted by Masaaki Sakai with his assistant Tohko Amemiya, and features many celebrity guests. This show is completely different from other cookery entertainment programmes in that the dishes are good sometimes and very BAD at other times! The chatting among the participants is hilarious. Masaaki Sakai (host), Touko Amemiya (hostess) and a guest try cooking the prepared menu, by following the instructions of three professional chefs (sometimes a video recording, sometimes they're live in the studio). After dinner the guest gives a rating from zero to three points (stars). At the end of the show, Masaaki does an advert for 'Suntory' beer where he says "Good night" in English (4) 02:13 Studio-based show with 4 people chatting [DURATION: 20 minutes] This does not feature Masaaki Sakai. It seems like it might be a Japanese learning programme - teaching you how to pronounce Japanese words. (5) 02:35 BBC World: The Travel Show [DURATION: 10 minutes] English travel guide to Japan - follow an English woman on a tour of Japan, arriving in Tokyo and visiting Nagano and Kyoto (6) 02:45 Tourism programme about Japanese [DURATION: 10 minutes] In Japanese, but with lots of great footage 02:55 End of tape Masaaki Sakai tape 2 - --------------------- (7) 00:00 Shinano No Columbo (TV movie) [DURATION: 1 hour 50 minutes] Masaaki plays a Japanese-style Columbo, called Iwao Takemura, and walks around in this baggy raincoat (he doesn't limp though). You see him going around putting the pieces together and solving the crime, it's so corny. 02:00 End of tape I can make copies of any / all of the above for everyone in the UK and Australia who's interested. All I ask in return is for you to cover the cost of a blank video tape and postage. Given the poor quality of most of "Aru Aru", a popular selection might be: (1) "Aru Aru" (first 10 minutes only) (2) "Tokugawa Yoshinobu" (45 minutes) (3) "Here's the Kitchen" (30 minutes) (7) "Shinano No Columbo" (1 hour 50 minutes) Then if you like, I could put some of (4), (5) and (6) on the end, so that it fills a 4 hour tape. If you're interested in having some of this on tape, send an email to me directly: parryh@hotmail.com Tell me the numbers of the items you're interested in having (e.g. (1) = "Aru Aru") Howell ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com - --------------------------------------------------------------- + To unsubscribe, send an email to: majordomo@valinor.eldar.org with 'unsubscribe monkey' in the body of your message + Need help? The Tower of Myriad Mirrors: A Supplement to Journey to the West. Berkley, CA: Asian Humanities Press, 1988. "The Tower of Myriad Mirrors is cast entirely as a dream of its protagonist Monkey. It does not specify that Monkey has been bewitched into a dream world until the plot is explained to him in the last chapter. Prior to that, the sense of dream is maintained by invoking the surreal logic familiar to dreamers" (Schultz 6). The story, composed of 16 chapters is meant to be inserted between chapters 61 and 62 of Wu Chen'eng's 1596 novel The Journey to the West. Schultz sees it as key to understanding the mental and spiritual growth that must underlie Monkey's enlightenment as a Buddha. - -- Howell ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com - --------------------------------------------------------------- + To unsubscribe, send an email to: majordomo@valinor.eldar.org with 'unsubscribe monkey' in the body of your message + Need help? Those kind folks at _DreamWatch_ have sent me the first two _Monkey_ tapes to review (for the mag that will come out in late April, I think). There's not much I can say yet, as I've not looked at them and (being promos) they just come in cardboard sleeves, but it's nice to see them in any form at all! Cheers Martin PS. In case anyone thinks I'm the luckiest blighter in the world, getting free tapes, I should point out that these promo tapes are time-coded. - --------------------------------------------------------------- + To unsubscribe, send an email to: majordomo@valinor.eldar.org with 'unsubscribe monkey' in the body of your message + Need help?
