I've just looked at the "Saiyűki" (Monkey) page on the Internet Movie Database: http://us.imdb.com/Title?0078659 and in the "Recommendations" section, it says: "If you like this title, we also recommend... Wizard of Oz, The (1939)" This freaked me out when I saw it, but thinking about it, there _are_ similarities... both contain a character who's on a journey to find something (the wizard vs. the holy scriptures), this character has 3 companions, and there's lots of challenges on the way. There's by no means a direct comparison between the characters in Monkey, and the characters in the Wizard of Oz, but a rough match might be: Dorothy - Tripitaka Scarecrow - ? Tin man - Sandy Cowardly lion - Pigsy Wizard - Buddha Toto - Monkey? The Wicked Witch of the West - Wasp Witch (from the episode "Mothers") The Good Witch - the Boddhisattva Kuan-yin the Compassionate Munchkins - nothing like this in Monkey (thank God!) Before the journey starts, they're in Kansas in TWOO (Heaven in Monkey), and they get sent to Oz (Earth in Monkey), where life isn't easy, and they discover that there's no place like home :) In both journeys, when they reach the end, the travellers all get rewarded. But I don't remember Tripitaka wearing ruby slippers! Yu Lung, perhaps? > Tin man - Sandy > Cowardly lion - Pigsy > Wizard - Buddha > Toto - Monkey? Hmm. I always considered Monkey to have a higher position than the Dog. Perhaps he should switch with Yu-Lung, since Yu Lung was once the animal in the group (as was Toto) and Monkey is second in command after Tripitaka (as Scarecrow was to Dorothy in my opinion) > The Wicked Witch of the West - Wasp Witch (from the episode "Mothers") Pity I haven't seen that one. I'd say any of the demons who want to stop Monkey & Co getting to India would fill that role easily > The Good Witch - the Boddhisattva Kuan-yin the Compassionate > Munchkins - nothing like this in Monkey (thank God!) Monkey's soldiers in the Garden of Fruit and Flowers? Those little clones he made in the Season Two opener were interesting... > > Before the journey starts, they're in Kansas in TWOO (Heaven in Monkey), and > they get sent to Oz (Earth in Monkey), where life isn't easy, and they > discover that there's no place like home :) > > In both journeys, when they reach the end, the travellers all get rewarded . > > But I don't remember Tripitaka wearing ruby slippers! > Hmm. He did have the magic ring. Oh, wait, that was Monkey. Well, since both characters are the main ones in their resepctive stories, well, seems normal.
