The managing director of Fabulous Films (currently based in Los Angeles) phoned me last night, and gave me lots of news about the Monkey video release: 1) There will be 13 videos released in total, each containing 3 episodes, and costing £12.99 each. The first 2 videos will be released in April 2000, and they'll then release 1 video every month. 2) The video box design will be done by "Form", the same company who did the video boxes for "The Water Margin", and will have a similar modern/fresh style. 3) At the top of each video box, the first 9 videos (episodes 1 - 27) will have the narrator's intro speech "In the worlds before Monkey..." from season 1, and the last 4 videos (episodes 28 - 39) will have the narrator's intro speech from season 2. 4) Also, on the back of each video box, there'll be a synopsis of each Monkey episode. I've volunteered to write these 39 episode synopses, and in return, my name will be credited on each video box. He also mentioned including some classic quotes from each episode on the video box. He's going to get someone to send me copies of the Water Margin video sleeves so I can see the style / layout that's going to be used. - - In the meantime, if anyone has any Water Margin video sleeves that you can scan in, please could you email them to me at: owner-monkey@valinor.eldar.org 5) Merchandising. He's not planning to get a full merchandising agreement with NTV at this stage, but nevertheless, he reckons he'll still be able to produce: * 4 t-shirts, 1 of each of the main characters, available in limited quantities and orderable from an order form which will appear in each video box * 13 postcards, 1 of which will be included in each video box. So buy all the videos to get the full set. If a merchandising deal does appear before the video release, he'll put flyers in all the video boxes, containing an order form for ordering all the merchandise. 6) Fabulous Films are expecting a package of colour stills and slides from NTV shortly, and he's going to give me copies of all of them so I can put them on my Monkey! site. 7) My web site URL will appear on each Monkey videotape label!!! 8) There won't be any way of preordering the videos from Fabulous Films directly - he suggests preordering them from a high street retailer like HMV or Virgin. As soon as he has all the catalogue numbers for the 13 videos, he'll pass them on to me, so you can use them to place your orders. 9) Australian fans - there'll be no media publicity for the video release in Australia, but you'll be able to order the videos either: * From an online video store, e.g. HMV Online, Virgin * By mail order from Fabulous Films, which would involve sending them an International Money Order for the cost of the video plus shipping 10) Fabulous Films are looking for someone who has costumes of Monkey, Pigsy, Sandy and Tripitaka, and would be interested in appearing: * On national UK TV, probably on "The Big Breakfast", in a 15 minute slot all about Monkey * In a publicity stunt in Oxford St (London) In both cases, you'd be required to have the Monkey weapons, and stage mock fights for the camera. - - Paul McMonnies has costumes of Monkey, Pigsy and Sandy - see this page: http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Towers/8153/costumes_paulmcmonnies.html So I'm going to ask him if he's interested in doing this. If any of you would be interested in making a Tripitaka costume, and appearing on national TV wearing it (probably doing the headache sutra etc.), please send me an email at: parryh@hotmail.com 11) Famous Monkey fans in the UK include: * Johnny Vaughan - so it's guaranteed that he'll do a "Monkey week" or something similar on "The Big Breakfast", and he'll possibly dress up as the characters from Monkey himself * Chris Evans and Danny Baker - so this guarantees coverage on "TFI Friday" and Virgin Radio (I think Chris Evans still does this) 12) Publicity is being handled by a PR company called "The Associates". Expect to see vast amounts of press coverage, including: * SFX * Loaded * NME, Q - all the music magazines * Skateboarding magazines 13) As video box designs are created, they'll send them to me, and I'll make them available for you all to look at / give your comments. 14) The Monkey video deal has taken 5 years of negotiations. When I asked him what changed, what made it go ahead, he basically said that Masaaki Sakai lowered his royalty demands, but he doesn't know why. I'm wondering if it's got anything to do with Nikki and I going out to Japan to meet him in November 1998 (I read him a little speech in Japanese telling him about the popularity of Monkey in the UK). 15) And here's the really big plan.... brace yourself for this one: They're going to contact Masaaki Sakai's agent in Tokyo, and see if they can get him to do a public appearance at Forbidden Planet in London, signing autographs etc. I'll let you know when I hear anything about this, as I can imagine we'll all want to go along to this! If you have any ideas / suggestions / comments /questions about any aspect of the Monkey video release, please drop me an email, and I'll pass them all on to Fabulous Films. There's no immediate plans to release Monkey on DVD. Here's the information about this that's on my Monkey Videos page: "There is no immediate plan to release the series on DVD, although Fabulous Films are interested in possibly doing this sometime in the future. However, to do this requires a completely separate deal to be made with NTV. So for the moment, they're concentrating on the video release." So, for at least a year or two, Monkey will only be available on video. English voice actors must have studied original version eagerly. It's so impressive. If you see Japanese Monkey, I think you would understand what I'm saying. In Monkey drama a snappy dialogue is a big appeal. Monkey's speech is crisp and it's a typical manner of Tokyo(former Edo) style. On the other hand, Pigsy speaks in a strong Tohoku accent. Nishida actually came from Fukushima Prefecture (Tohoku, the northeast region of Japan). His speech is very funny. And Sandy speaks with Kansai accent. Kishibe is a Kyoto person. These three characters make the drama so colorful and charming. I enjoyed English Monkey so much."
