The first was of course the Monkey king. According to this book in the original legend the Pure priest Tripitaka was only accompanied by two protectors. Monkey and Pigsy. This book went on to recount the adventures of Monkey which followed the series pretty closely, even down to monkey trying to fly out of Buddha's hand in that early episode. The second legend was a Japanese demon called a Kappa, which is a water spirit. These demons live in the water and have a bowl on their heads where water is kept. If the water falls out or the bowl became dry the Kappa would die. It occurs to me that Sandy might be a Kappa. Considering his bald patch which he was always rubbing with water. This would put a Japanese spin on a Chinese legend. Kinda cool huh. If I'm wrong or anyone has conflicting information feel free to dispute me on this, but I thought it was an interesting tit bit of Info.
