Hi. Remember a while ago I told you about a guy in the UK (called Andrew) who was (illegally) selling Monkey episodes on video for his own personal profit? Well, I've just received an email from him telling me that he took an order from someone in America, and received payment from him in the post, but now Andrew has lost his/her email and home address, and has the tapes sitting in a box waiting to go, but he doesn't know where to send them! He says that the person who ordered them *may* have been someone on this mailing list, and they *may* be from Virginia. If you're the person who ordered these videos from him, and you've not received them yet, please could you email me privately (parryh@hotmail.com), giving me your name and home address, so I can pass the details on to him, so he can then send your videos to you. Apparently, there was a good review of it in yesterday's Funday Times here in the UK. It was me. No, really. Ignore the .au in the email address - it stands for Augustus, Virginia. And I moved to Canberra, Australia. Honest. Just send 'em on over =) ...Matt... > He says that the person who ordered them *may* have been someone on this > mailing list, and they *may* be from Virginia. > > ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Jan 1999 09:48:27 +1100 From: TOLLEY Matthew Subject: [monkey] Translation of 'Journey to the West' Hi all For Xmas we scored (among other things) a copy of 'Monkey: Folk Novel of China', a translation of Ch'Eng-En Wu's original classic 'Journey to the West'. We were disappointed to find, however, that while he had translated the first two groups of chapters (dealing with the rise of Monkey and the background of Tripitaka's journey to India), he only translated a handful of the remaining eighty-something 'episodes' detailing the group's adventures. Does anybody know of a complete translation of all 100 chapters? Cheers ...Matt... ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Jan 1999 20:42:36 EST From: JRApici@aol.com Subject: [monkey] Translation of 'Journey to the West' There is a translation of "The Journey to the West" by Anthony C. Yu. It is the complete translation of all 100 stories. It also includes the poetry which is left out of most translations. It is suppose to be the most complete translation to date. It comes in 4 volumes and is published by The University of Chicago Press. The paperback version came out in 1980 and is still available. I recently purchased all four about a year ago and have seen them recently in bookstores. 25 stories in each edition. It is beautiful and translates very well into English. Good luck finding it, if you have any troubles send me a line and I can see what I can do. It's my birthday soon...anybody? Waley left them out of the edition we have, claiming they translated poorly. I wasn't too sure what he meant, but if the effect was anything like watching subtitles for the musical numbers in Hong Kong action flicks and anime, maybe he was right =) Cheers ...Matt... ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Jan 1999 21:51:07 EST From: JRApici@aol.com Subject: Re: [monkey] Translation of 'Journey to the West' It's actually quite beautiful if you think about the imagery they are conveying. They are nothing like english poetry, once you get over that and focus on the imagery I thought they were really beautiful. Order straight from Amazon (www.amazon.com) on the net. Even with the postage (I choose DHL Worldmail) and the lousy currency conversion rate (currently about 63c to the USD), you get it sooner (7-21 days instead of the usual 'around six weeks' most Aussie bookstores quote) and cheaper than through somewhere like Dymocks, Angus and Robertson or Collins. You can get the Arthur Waley translation for about $10US (plus US$12 for postage), or the 4-volume mega-translation for about US$100.
