If there's no video to go with it I think someone ought to make up a cheesy dance to go with the song. LOL Your e-mail to the VLC was good too, let's all keep our fingers crossed. Hahah a petitition sounds like a good idea to me. You can out my name down! :-) Best Wishes Nikki Brown ******************************************* "I can beat any deemon that ever lived!" Another writer's mentioned the the Chinese live-action series 'Journey to the West' (1986), in which the actors belonged to the Peking Opera, hence their physical grace: readers may also remember Japan's 'Monkey' (1979/81), translated (in the loosest sense!) into English by the BBC following the success of 'Water Margin.' The Monkey King (Sun Wu Kong in China, Son Goku in Japan) made his cartoon debut in Japan's 'Story of Songoku' (1926), which used cut-out figures. A better-known version is Osamu Tezuka's 'Saiyuki' (1960), which was released, slightly cut, as 'Alkazam the Great' in America. Notoriously, Alkazam was one of the titles selected by the Brothers Medved (the 'Golden Turkey' people) for their book on the 'Fifty Worst Films of All Time.' I've never seen either the dub or the Japanese original, so I can't judge. Many of the Medveds' brickbats were aimed at the dub script and cast (including Frankie Avalon), but they also trashed its 'weak, pretentious' animation. Then again, having read Michael Medved's 'Hollywood Vs America' - where he wrecks many of his arguments through gratuitous insults - I wouldn't take such judgements too seriously. The '60s also saw an acclaimed Chinese animation, 'Xi You Ji' (1964), while the legend inspired such anime epics as 'Saiyuki Starzinger' (1978), an SF reworking; 'Goku Midnight Eye', about a computer-aided cop with a Monkey-like fighting staff; and of course the never-ending 'Dragonball' saga. More recently, the Doraemon movie 'Nobita's Parallel Saiyuki' (1988) sent the whole thing up, while the Nippon TV special 'The Tale of Osamu Tezuka - I'm Songoku' (1989) saw the much-mourned 'God' of manga meeting Son Goku face-to-face. If you want to know more about Monkey's screen career, I recommend Martin King's excellent 'Monkey Business' article in the sadly-defunct UK 'zine 'Anime FX' (Issue 12, p26, March 1996 (?)), from which most of this info is taken. - -- andrew osmond ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 08 Jun 1998 10:01:25 PDT From: "Howell Parry" Subject: [monkey] The BBC Sci-Fi bulletin board Hi, here's another place where it could be a good idea to post a message about the BBC bringing back Monkey: http://www.oi.beeb.com/scifi-fantasy/ I'm thinking it'd be a bad idea for me to post a message there, because I've contacted the BBC a lot recently. So please could someone on the list from the UK post a message to this bulletin board, and we can all watch the discussion grow.... it could almost turn into an online petition if we get enough messages posted. I mentioned the other day that I'd like to find out when Bravo lose the broadcasting rights to show Monkey. I decided to send emails to NTV and Bravo, to try to get this information. Here's the reply I got from NTV: - --- Dear Mr. Parry: Thank you for your message regarding MONKEY. While appreciating your interest in seeing the series on terrestrial TV once again, we can not supply distribution-related information to individuals. The matter would have to be brought to our attention directly by a representative of the BBC or other terrestrial broadcaster. Thank you for your understanding, and for taking the time to contact us. Daniel Baron International Operations & Business Development - --- Here's the (more informative) reply I got from Bravo: - --- Hi Howell At present Bravo holds the rights to brodcast Monkey until end August'98. However I am not able to give any further information on the fate of these rights after that date. Kind regards K Mather Viewer Relations - --- So Bravo will lose the rights in August '98... There's an air of mystery about this email, which looks like perhaps someone else has already snapped up the rights after Bravo lose them... could it be the BBC?
