I can't remember seeing it either. As far as I can remember from watching it late last year - they did not in fact reach the end of their journey - I believe the last series was cut short from what it was originally meant to be hence the story was not finished. I am not sure if the reason was that Natsume (Tripitaka) was ill at the time and they decided to suspend filming. The only story of them reaching the end of their journey was when they were fooled into thinking they has reached the holy scriptures when in fact they hadn't. Hope this helps Dawn ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 02 Jun 1998 04:53:51 PDT From: "Howell Parry" Subject: Re: [monkey] the end of the line >I have a question which has been bugging me for a long time, Did the >gang ever reach India.? In the stories on which the series is based, they did reach India, and get the Buddhist scriptures. However, the tv series ended rather abruptly, and they didn't reach India :( The episode you described is "The End of the Way" which was the last episode of season 1, the season which had the original Pigsy, and the horse always in horse form. After this season, a 2nd season of 13 episodes was made, which featured a new Pigsy and featured the horse in human form (an annoying guy called Yu-Lung) quite a bit. Theories on why Monkey stopped after 39 episodes include the fact that all the filming was done in China, which costed a lot of money, and that they ran out of money. I also suspect that perhaps the 2nd season wasn't as popular as the 1st, especially with Pigsy being replaced by a different actor, and that contributed to the series ending abruptly?!? I asked a Japanese guy if this was the reason and he told me that it wasn't. Apparently, Masako Natsume became ill a few years after finishing work on Monkey. Nice idea, Warren. I've just phoned up the BBC, to ask them directly if they'll ever rerun Monkey. I told the person that Bravo currently has the British rights to screen Monkey, and her response was "Oh, the BBC won't be able to rerun it then." I told her that clearly the rights must go on sale every so often, and if they were interested, the BBC could bid for the rights and hence rerun it. She told me that she can't make any comment on that. She could only give me information about shows that the BBC currently has the rights to. I'd really like to know when the renewal time for Bravo to regain the tv rights is, so that I could tell the BBC a definite date when they could bid for the rights, should they choose to do so. I guess the only 2 bodies that know when the rights are up for renewal are Bravo and NTV. I don't imagine either of them will want to give this information to just anyone, will they? If anyone has any more ideas about this stuff, or if any of you know more about how these broadcasting rights "work", please let us know :) Howell ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Jun 1998 11:28:04 EDT From: MONKIMAGIC@aol.com Subject: [monkey] HELLO ALL HEY, IF ANY OF YAH ARE ON AOL, OR HAVE AOL IM, FEEL FREE TO CHAT WITH THE BIGGEST MONKEY MAGIC FAN! I e-mailed the Viewers and Listeners Correspondence and was e-mailed quickly back, the next day in fact. Would it be a good idea for us all e-mail the same address so we can get the message across? Howell I think you should also let them know of the mailing list and all the Monkey links :-) Here's the message I wrote to the BBC VLC, and their reply:- ____________________ I am writing to you with reference to the show "Monkey" which was broadcast by the BBC in the early 1980's. I belong to a Internet mailing list devoted to the show and I know there are many fans in this country as well as overseas of the show. At the moment Bravo are running the third series, but many fans do not have access to cable or satellite. They only remember the show from the time it was shown on the BBC. I know many people that have expressed a wish to see the show run again by the BBC. I did hear that the BBC haven't any plans to re-run "Monkey" as the rights to the show have ended, and that the BBC would need to re-purchase the rights. However the fact that the BBC have no plans to re-run "Monkey" is a great shame, as I can tell you exclusively that there are soon to be two remixed versions of the original 7" single "Monkey Magic" (the theme tune to the show) due to be released anytime now. There is one that has been done in Australia, but there is also one that has been made in this country, and I hear from my source that it is due to be released probably in August this year. This UK re-mix was played for the first time on Manchester's Key 103 station just last week on May 26. I think it will do well in the charts, especially so as the re-mix of "Kung-Fu Fighting" has climbed to number 12 in the charts. It would a nice idea if the BBC were to re-run "Monkey" to co-incide with the release of the single. :-) BTW I have no commercial interests in the single I'm just a huge "Monkey" fan. Another bit of news that might be of interest to you is that I know a UK video distribution company are doing their best to negotiate a deal to get the "Monkey" series released on video, but have been so far unsuccessful. On behalf of all the fans on the Internet "Monkey" mailing list...."PLEASE RE-SHOW MONKEY" :-) Thanks. And here's the reply from the BBC :- Beverley Thompson-VH >Thank you for your comments and suggestion about the above purchased >programme. I will pass your views on to those responsible for >purchasing programmes for BBC Television so that they are aware of the >strength of your feelings. >Regards >Viewer & Listener Correspondence - ------------------------------ Forever hopeful :-) , Nikki Brown ********************************************* "I can beat any deeemon that ever lived!"
