Hi there, a few weeks ago, I told you about Oriental Cinema magazine (published by Draculina Publishing in the US) having an issue which is mostly dedicated to tv shows, films and shows based on the story of the Monkey King. I sent away for my copy of this magazine, and received it 2 weeks later. It completely blew me away. There's over 20 / 30 pages of information about the Monkey King. This includes detailed descriptions of films and tv shows based on the story. There's a section that's dedicated to "Monkey" (it refers to it by its original Japanese name "Saiyuki")! In addition to providing background information on the show, and talking about the special effects etc., there's lots of episode reviews. There's another section that's dedicated to the recent Chinese remake "Journey to the West", and features lots and lots of reviews of episodes from it. In addition to this, there's lots of photos from the various films and tv shows. To find out how you can order yourself a copy of this magazine, and also to see a preview of one of the articles, check out my Monkey Magazines page: http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Towers/8153/magazines.html Here's a brief summary of new information I found in the Monkey / Saiyuki section: * In Japan, the 1st series of Saiyuki (26 episodes) debuted on October 1, 1978 * 7pm on Sundays in 1980, Saiyuki was shown in its original Japanese form on one of the "Bay Area"'s local Japanese TV channels (does anyone know what he means by "Bay Area" - is it San Francisco?) * Saiyuki was dubbed into English and released as "Monkey" by British people. The English version was released to Britain, Australia, and maybe even Canada, but has never been released to the US because of copyright problems. It's unfortunate, as the Chinese remake "Journey to the West" (with English subtitles) has been shown in the US. * Monkey's dubbed English voice sounds almost identical to the Japanese voice of Masaaki Sakai in the original version. * In the Japanese version, the characters are known by the following names: Monkey - Goku Tripitaka - Oushu Pigsy - Hakai Sandy - Gojo * The theme song "Monkey Magic" is sung entirely in English, even in the Japanese version - i.e. there is no Japanese version of it. * The ending song "Gandhara" differs between versions; in the Japanese version it is sung mostly in Japanese, while in the English version it is sung mostly in English. * In Japan, the 2nd series of Saiyuki (Saiyuki 2) first aired on November 11, 1979. * Jon Fukuda, who directed some Monkey episodes, has worked with Toho and helped to create many of the classic Godzilla movies. * Toshiyuki Nishida (who played Pigsy) co-starred with Hiroshi Fujioka and Naoya Sei in the Toei TV series "Special Crime Investigation Front". * Masaaki Sakai (who played Monkey) portrayed some sort of wrestling robot in some TV show a few years ago. For lots more information, I'd recommend buying this Oriental Cinema magazine!
