Related TV shows and films" web page (http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Towers/8153/related.html): - ---- A Chinese TV series TVB made a version of Monkey in 1996 called "Journey To The West" (the name of the full English translation of the story), starring Dicky Cheung , Chan Mui Ying ,Angie Cheung ,Kiung Wai, Lai Yu Chung , and Muk Chung Ching, and will have a followup series out in August 1997. Note: TVB is the world's largest producer of Chinese-language programmes, and people in Europe can see TVB programmes on TVB Superchannel Europe - http://www.chinese-channel.co.uk/tvb/ - ---- I guess you might find some information on the TVB web site, and I imagine someone in China *must* have a web site dedicated to this programme... Also, I'd recommend searching newsgroup archives for information using the excellent DejaNews service - http://www.dejanews.com/ I'd be very interested in seeing pictures from this show - please send them to me at: parryh@finnigan.co.uk - thanks! You can easily get a copy of the "Magic Monkey" CD from Japan by following these instructions: - ----------------------------------------------------------------- This CD appears to only be available in Japan. If you don't live in Japan, you can order it from the online CD store Comfort (based in Japan): http://web.kyoto-inet.or.jp/people/ohkura/ENGLISH/main.html You won't find the CD listed anywhere on their web site. Follow the instructions given for "Placing an Order", letting them know which country you're in and the CD details ("Magic Monkey" by Godiego), and they'll get back to you with the total cost and payment instructions. - ------------------------------------------------------------------ Howell ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Aug 1997 01:43:45 +0000 From: "Sheep Groper" Subject: Re: [monkey] Monkey music > >*smug smug* not only do I have a copy of that tape, but I brought it > >in when Godiego turned up at the ABC shop for a signing, so I have > >their signatures on the inside of the cover too! > > I don't believe it!!! > > Was it called "Magic Monkey" like the CD that's currently still > available in Japan, which had the following track listing: > > 1. Sentai shows normally feature a team of heroes, each with his/her own distinct colour, and big robots. Some sentai shows are Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, VR Troopers and Superhuman Samuri Syber Squad. ~Daniel ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Aug 1997 06:22:17 +0200 From: "Radovan UPIR Rybovic" Subject: [monkey] WIN95 System screens Hello folks! ======== I think, all fans of Monkey do everything for their hero. Does anyone else have this or have I got something pretty rare? snip Well greetings to all Yet another poor disciple who has spent years fruitlessly searching for things Monkey. Just having a brief read through one digest (having just subscribed) I'm intrigued that there seems to be a high Ozzie content. I find this interesting as I seem to think that maybe the show was only played here and in Asia - I believe it was a joint venture between the ABC and .. NTV ?. Months ago I found the Ultimate TV site and was horrified to find there was no page for Monkey - and told them so, and was very pleased when I got some mail with the links to Howell's and Michael's pages - great stuff people ! (I hope that's right - I'm at a different PC at the moment without my cheat notes :-) ) I spent a while downloading some of the sound clips (after finally tracking down the required plug ins - maybe a link would be nice ?) and on listening through was amazed at the recollections they triggered. The show was repeated about 2 maybe 3 times on the ABC over here over about 5-6 years maybe, and I watched it each time. At one stage I had every episode on video but one hazy day I seem to have made the decision to recycle - one of those decisions you really regret later. Anyway, I was pretty familiar with the dialogue and it was great to have the clips conjure up the visual images of the episodes etc. Same with the very detailed episode summaries. Some very funny moments. Anyway, for my first posting I should probably keep it short(er) ! So, no Chris you're not alone. I remember going into the ABC shop that used to be in the Rennasiance Arcade in Adelaide in the mid 80s during a stocktake sale and buying the Monkey LP for $2. It sounds identical to your tape with all the same songs which I do remember being in the series. And yes I agree Gandhara is a classic although I do have a soft spot for Thank You Baby. So my next step is to go find that Godiego CD. It gets better and better. Its great to know this list is out there and happening. Ever since I started watching Monkey, then reading the book that was published by the ABC which was just selected extracts from the original volumes of Journey to the West, which were themselves largely a means to highlight the political and religious red tape of the day, and going back and reading them, I have always thought of the show as a vehicle of learning in itself. In the end, behind the often corny acting etc I feel there was an underlying philosophy that i have taken with me ie it was more than just a fun action fantasy TV show. I remember reading in a Fango a few years ago that Tsui Hark was planning to make an action version of the series (book) but never heard anything or really followed it up. Anybody know anything ? As I'm sure that would contain the similar elements of humour and philisophy that were in the TV series, based on what he did with Chinese Ghost Story 1,2 and 3. And is the series ever being released on video ???!!!!! I also found a reference to a book that was I believe published by Penguin in the 1980's which was a book on the series and contained information, apparently, on the show, actors and included some pictures - but have had no luck tracking it down. Ring a bell ? Well, I think I might leave it there for now. Sorry for the lengthy posting but its nice to find people to talk too. Till next. Wendy you can't have freedom without responsibility, and then there's love...
