You would have to get permission to produce these t-shirts from the owner of the picture/poster. But, you do run the risk of the owner wanting a percentage of the price of the item sold. Try it - they can only say no. I`d have to check this, but copyrighting laws would surely only apply for commercial or widespread use. Would you also be flaunting copyright laws if you created a T-shirt from a film poster that you had bought? I`ll check and publish the results here on the list - unless anyone else already knows? Well, now I guess it's time to list some of the bad effects/bloopers I've found, which are really rather amusing and add to the charm of the show. In regard to costumes/make-up, I've seens several dodgy things. In the first couple of episodes Pigsy sports a pair of blonde, bushy eyebrows but in about the third episode, he suddenly loses them. The joins around the bald cap of Masako Natsume are clearly evident in most episodes, as is her hair underneath. The real hair of the actor playing Pigsy can often be seen too, under his blonde wig. Monkey's sideburns sometimes have a mind of their own by peeling off his face. There are funny problems with set designs and props as well. In heaven, the trunks of the peach trees were made from cardboard and most of the backdrops were just sets painted blue with white clouds. Also, when Monkey is imprisoned by Buddha, a whole ton of poorly disguised polystyrene rocks fall onto him. Moreover, a lot of the village set designs are obvious re-workings of the same set. It's clear that many location scenes are filmed in the same area because the scenery and landscape is often similar in a lot of episodes. The sound effects are often hilariously inconsistent. When Monkey fights someone stick to stick, metallic clashing sounds are heard despite the fact that Monkey's staff is supposedly wooden. This is the same with the weapons of Sandy and Pigsy. In fight scenes, monsters often die without even being hit and the three pilgrims sometimes hit each other accidentally :) When Monkey changes into a wasp, you can sometimes see the wires which are flying him along. In the third episode, Pigsy tries to remove Monkey's headband with massage oil but Monkey protests saying that it won't budge. However, a second later you can see it move quite clearly down his head! There is one episode where Monkey fights the Spirit of All Great Snakes. They are fighting with weaponry and as Monkey bashes the sword from the clutches of the spirit, the blade bends! (like the plastic swords you get in showbags :)) People have already mentioned other dodgy designs, like the mangy koala suit worn by a dog spirit and the hilariously fake gorilla suit worn by Monkey to represent his ape-like torso. I'm sure there are heaps of other badly funny effects I'll spot in future, Nick ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 31 Jul 1997 09:59:24 -0400 From: greg Subject: [monkey] BAD MONKEY VISUALS So? C`mon, we all know it`s fake `n` cheesy, but isn`t that half the appeal? Continuity errors are present in all things... I realise you are not criticising Monkey, but unless they muck-ups are relatively amusing, there`s no point highlighting them to make the show look foolish. At least it wasn`t quite as bad as certain modern day soaps, and there was always an point involved, not like the stupid american 'feel-good factor' cliched hearty-laughter-at-the-end sort of moral. So- I listed some funny points about Monkey; I thought other readers might be interested. Obviously you weren't. C`mon, we all know it`s fake `n` cheesy, but isn`t that half the appeal? Yes and if you read my message properly, you'll see that I said that. Anyway, I'm sure not everyone knows it's fake and cheesy. A lot of people haven't seen it since they were young and when I was young, the whole series seemed very real to me. Continuity errors are present in all things... I didn't even mention continuity errors. I mentioned shortcomings of the production. Continuity errors are where things are inconsistent from shot to shot. I realise you are not criticising Monkey, but unless they muck-ups are relatively amusing, there`s no point highlighting them to make the show look foolish. Well, I think they are amusing. When I've watched episodes with other people, they have spotted the errors as well and had a good giggle at them. Making the show look foolish!?- the tone of the program is often foolish and that's where the appeal lies. Of course, there were serious moments too but largely, it is pretty tongue in cheek and the actors obviously knew this coz they hammed it up quite a bit. At least it wasn`t quite as bad as certain modern day soaps, I don't think Monkey can be compared to soaps- the genre is entirely different. Soaps have a different mode of production (they don't have many special effects for a start). I suppose dodgy acting performances are the only things you can compare :) and there was always an point involved, not like the stupid american 'feel-good factor' cliched hearty-laughter-at-the-end sort of moral. Well, the morals in Monkey I could never really discern- a lot of what the narrator says is quite pretentious and silly which is not to say it isn't fun. But I agree with what you say about the stupid American cliched stuff; it is pretty shocking and I'd prefer Monkey anyday. Nick. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 31 Jul 1997 11:03:20 -0400 From: greg Subject: Re: [monkey] BAD MONKEY VISUALS Nick OK, so I made some bad comparisons, like with the soaps. But things like eyebrows being different are continuity errors. What the narrator says is part of the Buddhist`s belief`s and do make sense. Read some Confucious, unless you already have. Anyway, sorry, no offense meant. Right, yeah - they produced these t-shirts initially so people who bought the Water Margin videos could send off for the t-shirts. Looks like they've got some left, so they're trying to sell them off now. What did you think of the design? I looked at it in "Cult TV" last night, and myself and a friend who looked at it weren't really that impressed with it.
