The other day, I emailed every single email address I could find relating to NTV, the Japanese TV company that made Monkey, asking them about the availability of Monkey merchandise, e.g. photos, posters, books, t-shirts, and one of them replied! >Dear Mr. Parry, >thank you very much for your message about MONKEY. Unfortunately to our >knowledge there is no merchandise available. Sorry that we could not be of >more assistance. I thought that, since I got a reply, I'd ask them if they knew anything about Monkey being released on video in the UK, just to heard it from their side, and this is what they said: >Thank you for your message. Due to rights clearance matters, it is >difficulty to say if or when Monkey might become available on video. In >other words, I would not get my hopes up. Again, thank you for your >interest. Lack of good quality pictures would seem the only problem. A friend of mine has informed me that the t-shirt printing place I know in Manchester may refuse to print a Monkey t-shirt for me, because I don't own the copyright for the images from Monkey. He's used this t-shirt place before, and when he gave them a graphic to print (which was his own creation) they checked that he owned the copyright before they printed it. If I want to get just 1 Monkey t-shirt printed for myself, would this cause a problem? Is the issue here whether I'm doing it for commercial gain? Surely, if I'm doing it with no intention of making any profit, it should be ok? Or do I still need to contact NTV, to ask their permission? Confused! When I had my Amiga (don't start on me) T-shirt printed from a photo in a catalog, the guy didn't ask about copyright. > If I want to get just 1 Monkey t-shirt printed for myself, would this > cause a problem? Well, the place I go to don`t seem to worry - they printed an Ian Wright picture from the paper for a friend of mine and have created several other exclusive film T-shirts (i.e. Reservoir Dogs, Man Bites Dog,etc) for other friends, which is what provoked the idea in the first place. Try it - they can only say no. I`d have to check this, but copyrighting laws would surely only apply for commercial or widespread use. Would you also be flaunting copyright laws if you created a T-shirt from a film poster that you had bought? I`ll check and publish the results here on the list - unless anyone else already knows?
