The first segment of the credits, which ends with Monkey hatching from the egg, was edited down from about 50 seconds to about 10. No four worlds forming again and yet again, no rock becoming magically fertile, no elemental forces causing it to hatch, and, as you say, no Monkeeeeeey scream leading into the theme song. That whole sequence really established the mood for the whole programme for me, and they completely ruined it. Thrax ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 Jul 1997 10:54:06 ? (EST) From: Chris Hadgis Subject: [monkey] Episode summary 206 - Vampire Master Season 2, Episode 06 - "Vampire Master" One night, the three disciples argue about what keeps Heaven and the earth separated. Tripitaka wants to go to a place where buddhism is the state religion - - the Kingdom of Buddha's Law. Pigsy runs ahead and is met by men wielding swords. He tells them he is a buddhist and they attack him. Another man and his guards ride up and try to arrest Monkey. Monkey wants to fight them, but Tripitaka forbids it. The man is the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Buddha's Law and recognises Tripitaka. The pilgrims are taken to the king's palace. In this land, they don't know how to deal with wickedness. In the mountains to the west there are black magicians. They are aided by bandits. Monkey suggests they fight, but Buddha's law prevents it. Pigsy is thinking about his stomach again and is admonished by Sandy. The King and Queen enter. The King wants Tripitaka to stay and teach them. He asks Lord Chin if the banquet is ready, which pleases Pigsy. After a state reception, the pilgrims retire to the Prime Minister's residence. Pigsy is almost full. The others are ashamed of him. He is offered an apperitif and accepts. The Prime Minister's daughter, Shan-Lan is at their service. The disciples are happy because she is pretty. Tripitaka is upset with them. He wants to show them a buddhist land and all they think about is pleasure. Tripitaka says they will be leaving in the morning. The disciples are awake but no-one has seen Tripitaka. Monkey: "Even Buddha, he's a killjoy" He has a bad fever. The doctors try to help him. They aren't sure what is wrong but they think it is Tibetan fever. Tripitaka lays unconscious as Shan-Lan tends to him. Early the next morning, a girl is murdered. When Monkey looks in on Tripitaka, he seems to be improving. Monkey notices a blood-stain on Tripitaka's clothes near his neck. It is said the girl was killed by a vampire. The Prime Minister doesn't know what to do about it. Pigsy is exploring the capital. He tries to pick up a married lady. He meets the Prime Minister and tells him he can help solve his problems since he was Marshal of the Heavenly Host. Monkey and Sandy notice Pigsy is late for lunch. When he finally arrives, resplendant in a uniform, he announces he has been made Captain of the Guard. Monkey and Sandy can't believe it. Monkey: "It's your neck not mine you fat, flatulent, fake hero". Pigsy leads a night patrol to find the vampire. The vampire attacks a girl, but it is really Monkey in disguise. The vampire is dressed like a holy priest. It is eventually trapped between Monkey and Pigsy. The vampire is revealed to be Tripitaka! They go back to Tripitaka's bed where they find him fast asleep. Tripitaka notices something is wrong but they won't tell him anything. They do tell Sandy that they think Tripitaka is the vampire. Sandy thinks they are joking at first but he is soon convinced. He insists Tripitaka was in bed all night. Lord Chin says Tripitaka should be arrested. Tripitaka overhears them talking about the vampire and denies it is him. Lord Chin tells his guards to arrest Tripitaka. Monkey tells the others not to resist in case they are arrested as well. Only Tripitaka is taken away. The Queen suggests the buddhist laws are to blame for what has happened with Tripitaka. The Prime Minister wants the King to release Tripitaka but the King says Tripitaka will be executed. He declares that this is no longer a buddhist country. Priests are driven from the land. Narrator: "Like a thirsty man drinking salty water, desires can never be satisfied - they can be mastered through awakening" The Prime Minister, Sandy, and Pigsy decide to try and break Tripitaka out of prison. Monkey, disguised as a wasp, overhears them. He decides to teach them a lesson and flies off. Tripitaka asks for water but is mocked by the guards. Sandy and Pigsy release him, but Lord Chin is wating for them. They fight but the three of them and the Prime Minister are captured. He tells them Monkey was the informer. They can't believe that Monkey betrayed them and now thinks buddhism is bad. Pigsy: (to Monkey) "May you get a reincarnation as an enormous great smelly camel with three humps" Monkey declares to Lord Chin that he is anti-buddhist. He also wants to be the state executioner. Lord Chin says his first execution will be that of Tripitaka, Sandy, Pigsy, and the Prime Minister. Lord Chin meets the Queen. Their bandits are ready to attack. They are both vampires. They fly off in their cloud to meet with the bandits. They rally their troops and promise them the world. Monkey, disguised as a girl, leads one of the bandits outside by telling him their is a star spirit to see him. He hits Lord Chin on the head and says "you've seen stars". The last buddhists - Tripitaka, Sandy, Pigsy, and the Prime Minister - are to be executed. They are forced to kneel. Monkey appears with a kwon-do. They still can't believe he's a traitor. Sandy: "Ah, the friend we love, suddenly unrecognisable, becomes a swine" Pigsy: "I hardly think it's the right insult" Monkey teases them some more. Lord Chin orders him to kill them. Monkey strikes, releasing the prisoners. He reveals Lord Chin and the Queen as vampires. Monkey asks Sandy and Pigsy to reveal what is under the platform. It is the bandit Monkey captured the previous night. Monkey thinks he should be questioned. Pigsy finally realises Monkey was only pretending. Lord Chin and the Queen reveal their true form. There is another fight. The land returns to buddhism. The pilgrims leave. Monkey apologises to Sandy and Pigsy for going too far. When he bows to Pigsy, he head- butts Pigsy's nose. Monkey: (to Pigsy) "You've got a red nose and no sense of humour" Tripitaka says he knew what Monkey was doing all the time, and threatens Monkey with the sutra when Monkey doesn't believe him. Monkey says Tripitaka is becoming cunning. Narrator: "Cunning and stupidity may belong together in an ape. A monkey who can recognise both could be on the long road towards humanity" Notes: * Why did the guards attack Pigsy when he said he was a buddhist? It's likely they thought he was a shape-changer or bandit. * When Pigsy realises Monkey is still a friend, Monkey kisses him on the lips. * It is never made clear in the episode (at least not to me) whether Tripitaka was actually a vampire, or whether it was a shapechanger (possibly the Queen or Lord Chin, or even Shan-Lan) disguised as Tripitaka. I tend to think it was a shapechanger, but that doesn't explain how the blood got onto his clothes. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Jul 1997 10:13:25 ? (EST) From: Chris Hadgis Subject: [monkey] Episode summary 208 - Pigsy, King And God Season 2, Episode 08 - "Pigsy, King And God" The pilgrims enter the Kingdom of Red-Hog. Monkey and Sandy are teasing Pigsy. He appeals to Tripitaka for help, but Tripitaka tells him he should be more truthful. In the village, there is the noise of a celebration. They say that the prophecy about Pigsy has come true. They think he has chosen to leave Heaven and save Earth. They want him to be their king and hog god. Monkey and Sandy try to convince him otherwise and tell the villagers that he is a bad choice for a king and god, but of course Pigsy wants to stay there. Monkey says their insults were only jokes and that he has no sense of humour. Tripitaka reminds him that Buddha will return everything Pigsy has lost once the scriptures have been returned. However, Pigsy is determined to stay. Monkey and Sandy still can't believe it. Monkey: "You know what he's the king of? All the idiots" Tripitaka says they should stay and that Pigsy is only being stubborn. Monkey and Sandy mock Pigsy. Tripitaka says they are to blame for this because they teased Pigsy and accepts some of the blame himself. He wants Monkey and Sandy to convince Pigsy to come back to them. Sandy wonders if there is a country which accepts fish spirits as kings. Monkey says Tripitaka doesn't understand Pigsy. Monkey: "How can he begin to understand the depth of the hog's stupidity" Monkey suggests they tell Tripitaka they tried to convince Pigsy to return while they have a good night's sleep. Tripitaka is visited by a spirit. It is the former king of Red-Hog. He was killed by an usurper, Sai Tasume, who is really the red hog monster spirit. He is a cunning politician who wants to convert the country to hog worship. He holds the spirit's daughter, Green Lotus, prisoner. He'll sacrifice her and the other disciples. Tripitaka must stop him so the spirit can rest. He agrees to help. Tripitaka: "Hog worship is carrying religious tolerance too far" Sai Tasume is in his demon form. He eventually wants to rule Heaven itself. The next morning, Monkey and Sandy awaken to "an orgy of hog worship" as Sandy calls it. The Red Hog Demon says the princess must be sacrificed. He says the hog god will allow you to do whatever you want. Behind him, there is a landslide on the mountain. It clears to reveal two huge doors, which eventually open to reveal a giant statue of Pigsy! Pigsy's spirit is inside it. This makes Monkey angry and he wants to fight. Pigsy says no, and that he is their idol. "Bone idle" says Monkey as the fight begins. It ends when the Red Hog Demon blows through a bamboo tube, turning Sandy's arm to stone. Monkey and Sandy escape. Monkey and Sandy meet up with some rebels. The rebels, led by Hung Yu, think hog worship is wrong. They tell Monkey and Sandy about the Red Hog Demon. They want to rescue the princess but they fear his weapon, the bamboo tube. Sandy : "Old Pigsy had a stone head anyway, so it's likely to be difficult to notice the difference" Monkey: "Look here, Sandy, what a thing to say. I know Pigsy was an idiot but his head was really soft and never hard" Sandy wants a spell to restore his arm to flesh. Monkey tells Hung Yu to help Sandy look after Tripitaka while he searches the palace for the princess. Monkey promises Sandy he will help him. Meanwhile, Tripitaka is trying to convince the villagers that hog worship is wrong. He is arrested by guards. The Red Hog Demon wants a confession from the princess, but instead she wrote a list of all the horrible things he has done. He can't kill her until she signs a confession, Monkey turns into a wasp to follow the Red Hog Demon to the princess. She is playing "paper, scissors, rock" with her jailor, Lee Tsu, who is still loyal to her. Her cell door is unlocked. She has promised she won't try and escape. She realises the "king" is really a demon. She tells him she was only teasing when she wrote that list and she promises to write him a confession tomorrow. It must say that Buddhism led her to unspeakable evil. If she refuses, he will torture her. The Red Hog Demon leaves. She knows she can't write the confession. Lee Tsu wants her to escape but she refuses because she believes everything will work out. Monkey appears and says he is here to rescue her. He makes a doll - a replica of the princess - to trick the demon. He warns Lee Tsu not to touch it. As they leave, Monkey's staff gets stuck in the doorway, tripping him. Once they are outside, Monkey calls his cloud and they fly away. She struggles so much that she falls, but Monkey catches her in time. He tells her to put her arms around his waist and hold on tight. They return to Sandy and the rebels. Tripitaka is gone. A girl arrives and tells them that he has been captured. The Red Hog Demon tells Tripitaka he and the princess are going to be executed. He thinks hog worship will make him immortal. Monkey, Sandy, and the rebels are trying to think of a way to rescue Tripitaka. The princess says they should all fight. Sandy reminds her of the bamboo tube. Green Lotus says it is hers. It is from Korea, and grows once every thousand years. To restore Sandy's arm, they have to reverse the tube, and suck instead of blow. She has a plan to get the bamboo tube. The villagers spend the evening cutting bamboo up into tubes. Monkey and Sandy are worried about Tripitaka as he languishes in his cell. Green Lotus is wearing her father's robes. Hung Yu says she is already their queen but she says they must still fight the Red Hog Demon. They march off to battle. The Red Hog Demon goes for his confession, and soon discovers the deception. A guard tells him the princess is attacking. The fight is in progress. The princess accidentally causes Monkey to get hit in the head, and Sandy releases Tripitaka. The Red Hog Demon stops the fight. As he prepares to blow into the tube, the villagers throw their bamboo tubes at him, causing him to drop his. Because all the tubes look alike, he can't find his. The Red Hog Demon changes into demon form and challenges Monkey to a fight. The demon whistles up his black cloud, and Monkey calls his. Monkey chases him. They have an aerial joust. The demon makes the Pigsy statue snort smoke at Monkey, temporarily blinding him. As he comes out of the smoke, he sees a wall. There is no time to fly over it, so he just goes through it. This gives him a headache. The demon flies through a forest. As Monkey chases him, the demon causes trees to fall, trying to crush Monkey. Then he flies through a mountain range. He conjures a cloud from which lightning strikes the mountains, breaking boulders off so that they fall on Monkey. He dodges them all. Monkey knocks the demon off his cloud. The demon falls, but his cloud catches him in time. Unfortunately, it also flies into a building. Monkey flies at the demon, and by extending his staff, he pins the demon against the mountain behind the Pigsy statue. This creates a landslide which buries the Red Hog Demon. Tripitaka: "You didn't hurt him, I hope" Monkey : "No. He didn't feel a thing" The princess, now a queen, thanks Monkey. She tells Tripitaka she will try to be a good queen, and her country will become a Buddhist country. Pigsy reminds everyone he is still a statue. Monkey says he must apologise for being so stubborn, but Pigsy doesn't want to. They eventually find the correct tube. Pigsy and Sandy's arm are restored. The queen bids them farewell. The pilgrims continue their journey. Notes: * This is the second episode where Tripitaka is visited by a spirit. * Once again, Pigsy's stubbornness leads him into trouble. * Exactly how the statue of Pigsy becomes so big is never addressed. One can suppose it is part of the Red Hog Demon's magic powers. * Look for the infamous "Monkey gropes the princess" scene when Monkey steps forward to accept the Red Hog Demon's challenge. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Jul 1997 10:19:04 ? (EST) From: Chris Hadgis Subject: [monkey] Episode summary 209 - Village Of The Undead Season 2, Episode 09 - "Village Of The Undead" A man, a woman, and two girls are watching the pilgrims approaching their village. He says the pilgrims must believe in them if they are to have life. In order for the pilgrims to truly believe, they must die. The pilgrims are resting. Monkey wants to continue while Sandy and Pigsy want to sleep. He gets Pigsy up by kicking him in between his legs. Tripitaka asks them why they are fighting. Pigsy says Monkey hurt him, and Monkey says they are lazy. Tripitaka tells Monkey that he criticizes his brothers too much and should be more tolerant. Monkey just worries about Tripitaka. Tripitaka wants to go the village to beg for food because Monkey has been complaining that he does all the work. Pigsy fetches his begging bowl and staff. Monkey is annoyed with Pigsy. Tripitaka walks down the street of the village. It's very quiet. He sees the woman in a door way. As they enter the court yard, he meets the two girls. They are Mai-Pau and Mai-Lau. They go inside where he is introduced to the man. He is Wun-Lung. Tripitaka is asked to sit until some food can be brought him. He looks around nervously before saying he can smell roast pork. He explains that he is a Buddhist and so does not eat meat. The lady offers him bat soup, newt eyes, grilled baby, and snake tongue. Tripitaka is worried. He tries to leave but is ordered to stay. He is to remain there as bait to attract his disciples. Monkey is worried because Tripitaka has been gone for many hours. Monkey goes after him. Before he leaves, he 'accidentally' steps on sleeping Pigsy's stomach. Pigsy: "I shall bash that hairy ape the very next time I catch him nodding off" As he searches for Tripitaka, Monkey feels something is wrong. He sees the woman and two girls, who are talking about frogs, leaving a house. He enters the empty court yard, and the door to the house opens by itself. He sees a bound Tripitaka. Monkey rescues him and they return to Sandy and Pigsy. Monkey tells them about the female witches. They prepare to leave. Pigsy says he doesn't believe Monkey about the women. He wants to learn more about them so he goes off to find them for himself. The woman thinks all four disciples believe they exist now. Wun-Lung insists the disciples must be killed so they can live. It is the only way. He uses magic to call Monkey. Pigsy walks down the street. Wun-Lung detects him and the spirits prepare to receive him. They prepare a wine to turn him into a pig. Narrator: "The world is a trap for fools. Only those who see are free" Tripitaka is worried about Pigsy. He wants Monkey to bring him back but Monkey refuses. Sandy, always the second choice, goes instead. Sandy arrives at the house. He hears a flute playing. From the court yard, he can see Pigsy sitting at a table, being attended to by Mai-Lau. Sandy tries to stop Pigsy from drinking the wine, telling him that it is poison. Pigsy has his pig features. Sandy is introduced to Mai-Pau. They encourage him to stay for a drink and he decides to stay. He reminds them of Tripitaka but says he can wait for a while. Tripitaka is now worried about both of them. He wants Monkey to go and fetch them. Monkey refuses and goes to sleep. The woman spirit thinks the drug-deluded Sandy and Pigsy will destroy Monkey for them. Wun-Lung's plan is that the disciples will die because they think they should. Mai-Lau tells Pigsy that people should have whatever they need, and ladies should please their men. Pigsy agrees completely. At another table, Sandy is eating and drinking. Mai-Pau and the woman offer him wine. He says he knows it is poison, but he wants more and more, until finally he gets his trout features. The woman reports that Sandy and Pigsy are transformed. They are to marry Mai-Pau and Mai-Lau the next day at dawn. Monkey wakes up to find that Sandy and Pigsy have not returned. Tripitaka asks Monkey once again to go. He finally agrees. He summons his cloud and goes looking for them. He arrives at the village and starts calling for them. He is almost shot by a needle. Sandy comes out and tells Monkey that he and Pigsy are getting married to two girls and don't want to go to India any more. Sandy and Monkey fight. Sandy soon retreats as the woman and Mai-Pau come out and demand he surrender. When he doesn't, they spit poison needles at him. He is soon hit by some of them. Wun-Lung orders him to return to Tripitaka, and eventually he does so. Pigsy thinks he heard Monkey outside. Mai-Lau says he will return later. They continue to gain life. She convinces Pigsy to be their hostage. Sandy knows what is going on, but he is too happy to care. Mai-Pau smashes the jar of wine. Monkey tries to get Tripitaka to leave. Tripitaka thinks they are suffering from illusions. He tells Monkey not to use violence but convince his brothers to return. Again Monkey refuses so Tripitaka says he will go. Eventually Monkey tells Tripitaka to stay and goes himself. Monkey returns to the village. The woman tells everyone he is here. Once more Monkey fights Sandy as Wun-Lung goes after Tripitaka. Monkey chases Sandy inside but retreats from the girls' needles. He turns his staff into a shield and blocks them. He turns the shield back into the staff and strikes at them, but they disappear. Sandy wants Pigsy to help but Pigsy thinks they should hide. The woman says Tripitaka has been captured. Tripitaka is once again tied up inside the house. Sandy and Pigsy enter the room. He asks them for help but they refuse. Pigsy says they fear Monkey. Tripitaka tells them Monkey has been ordered not to resist. Monkey calls for them. Sandy and Pigsy are ordered out to talk to Monkey, who is still trying to fight the disappearing girls. They go out with Tripitaka and Wun-Lung. They order Monkey to surrender. He doesn't want to. Tripitaka say his only choices are to surrender or run away, so he gives himself up. Tripitaka and Monkey are both tied up. Tripitaka tells Monkey he can escape if he wants to, but Monkey decides to hang around. The spirits are fully alive. The woman wants to know whether they will still be alive after they kill those who gave them life in the first place. Wun-Lung assures her they will be. Monkey will die because he will believe he is being dissolved in acid. Mai-Pau overhears them and fears for Sandy and Pigsy. She runs off to warn Sandy. She tells him about the spirts - they are only real because the thoughts of the disciples made them real. She doesn't want Sandy to die. She asks him for death for herself but he refuses. They care too much for each other. Monkey is in the acid bath. He claims that it tickles but he soon feels himself burning. Sandy thinks they should help but Pigsy wants to stay drunk. They take Tripitaka closer to Monkey. In one swift movement, Mai-Pau stabs Wun-Lung. She understands that they cannot live at the expense of Monkey's life. Soon, all the spirits are gone, as is the acid bath and the entire village. They slowly realise that the whole experience was an illusion. The pilgrims continue their journey. Notes: * There is a sign, in Chinese, outside the house. What does it say? * This is the first episode where we see Sandy as a trout. * Why didn't Tripitaka use the headache sutra on Monkey when he disobeyed him? * This has to be one of the darker stories of the show so far. The atmosphere when Tripitaka was in the house begging for food was first class. * Contrary to most episodes, there was very little fighting in this one, and an entire cast of only eight people. This must surely be one of the smallest casts of any episode. * As far as I can tell, the woman was un-named. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Jul 1997 13:34:22 ? The problem is we'd have to have a couple of conventions in different countries, as I'm sure we can't all afford to travel the world for a convention of monkey fans. Though Monkey and his friends made much harder pilgrimage.
