Not a bad analogy IMHO. It sounds just like one of those dreadful Cliff Richard Christmas singles to me. Complete with all the Christian overtones - strange for a series about a Buddhist pilgrimage. Ok, "Gandhara" wasn't the best song of all time, but it was a million times better than its replacement. The beginning credits of the third (or second if your Japanese contacts are to be believed) series were a pale shadow of the original too. As was the third season Pigsy. And the horse in human form was crap too. All IMHO of course. Thrax ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Jul 1997 12:14:32 +0100 From: Martin Packer Subject: Re: [monkey] Did they make it? Howell Parry quotes: >I thought the whole idea of the series is that they do =not= get to >India to show that all life is a journey. Or something like that. I'm not sure that was the original intention, but the third (I'll continue to think of it as the third, rather than second) series credits do say that the pilgrims are "on a journey as long as life". Suggesting that the pilgrimage has become far more spiritual than practical. I believe that they do actually make it in the original story, and the scriptures they collect are part of Buddhist literature. In fact, I think the scriptures are called the "Tripitaka", meaning "three baskets" because they came in three baskets. It sounds terrible - and I've just ordered a Godiego greatest hits CD from Japan that has this song on it! I'll tell you what I think when I hear it again after all these years. >The beginning credits of the third (or second if your Japanese >contacts are to be believed) series were a pale shadow of the >original too. "U see stars into ur imagination.........." ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Jul 1997 22:35:15 +1000 (EST) From: Nick McCarthy Subject: Re: [monkey] Holy and Bright [snip] The beginning credits of the third (or second if your Japanese contacts are to be believed) series were a pale shadow of the original too. How are they different? I don't remember... Well, the third series opening montage is a shorter reworking of the original one and the "character profiles" are done in a slightly different fashion. The narrator's opening speech is changed considerably and the line where he says, "the pheonix can fly only when it's feathers are grown" has been deleted. The major letdown though is when the Monkey title comes up. It is the same title as in the first two series, except the wonderful "Monkey!" shout has been changed and replaced by a short musical piece. The Narrator also introduces the characters, with Monkey fighting on The Great Wall, Tripitaka praying and Pigsy Number 2 carrying a young girl on his back. The Narrator explains Pigsy's different physical image by saying that "he is changing" and becoming more human. Yu-Lung also appears in the re-worked credits sequence. As was the third season Pigsy. And the horse in human form was crap too. All IMHO of course. I think a lot of people will agree with you on all this :) He was really a watered down version of the Pigsy character with similar cowardly traits although he didn't lust after girls like Pigsy. I reckon they introduced Yu-Lung so there'd be another character for Monkey to bully and tease :) Nick. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Jul 1997 08:30:46 PDT From: "Howell Parry" Subject: Re: [monkey] Holy and Bright >Well, the third series opening montage is a shorter reworking of the >original one and the "character profiles" are done in a slightly different >fashion. Thanks for all this information; I don't remember any of this. From what you've said, I'd agree that it doesn't sound as good as the original opening titles. >As was the third season Pigsy.
