Evil, not evil as in "I am so good and so righteous... you are not worthy... it is my duty to cut you into little pieces & make this world a better place for all the little children..." Maybe, there is right & wrong, where wrong is if you inhibit others from growing to their full potential - reaching a higher state, I guess. It's like in all the sutras... "what is good, what is evil... dust" hehe... something like that, can't think now. > I agree, though, that banishing evil is impossible, but to me that > was the point. Everyone knows that they will make it. They were destined to experience 109,999 tests/hardships (if I remember correctly) before they arrive at the destination. So the experiences they go through are suppose to elevate them from what they were to beings worthy of a place in heaven. > Incidentally, it seems odd to me that the Taoist monk in series.. > erm.. 3 I think... was portrayed as being quite evil. O, you have to understand that these guys were renegade taoists, using their abilities for greed & worldly pleasures ;) In fact they were originally animals just like monkey. After having lived for so long, their accumulation of "tao" made them powerful & more human. bye :) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Jun 1997 20:39:36 +0000 From: "Semprini" Subject: Re: [monkey] Remakes of "Monkey" series > > The way I understood it was that by retrieving the scriptures they > > were banishing evil, which is why all the demons wanted to kill them > > all. > > But, I am probably wrong. > > Banishing is such a harsh word. I think anyone who thinks "I am so good and righteous..." etc. is bound to be evil. I understand that's not a Buddist philosophy because Buddists, in general, don't cut people into little people. Well, not if they're proper Buddists anyway. I read a book about evil recently which said that evil is actively preventing the spiritual development of others whilst concealing your own weaknesses (or rather that's a naive translation of it). > > I agree, though, that banishing evil is impossible, but to me that > > was the point. After having lived for so > long, their accumulation of "tao" made them powerful & more human. Right. Doesn't really sound like they're exactly the most dedicated Taoists in the world then. Incidentally, if anyone's interested, there's quite an amusing book which describes Taoism through Winnie the Pooh ("The Tao of Pooh and the Te of Piglet" I think it is, by Benjamin Hoff). I've only just started it though. .oOo. Yeah, I really *love* this song too - it really is a classic. The "Magic Monkey" CD has the lyrics to all the songs on the CD insert, so I'll type the words to "Thank You, Baby" up and send them to the list. Some birds die in mid-air and monkey catches them on a skewer and turns them into a shishkabob. (2) Another episode features a bit where monkeys bow staff aquires a radar dish......ancient technology! (3) Monkey comes to a mountain that he has to get past. For some reason he can only go THOUGH the montain by digging through it. The is an old man there who has been inexplicably dig through it for most of his life but monkey digs through it in two seconds with his staff. The old man isn't pleased! Does anyone else remember these "incidents"? I've actually seen Masaki Sakai as a presenter on a variety show, and I would say that the voices match So, I've pretty much been under the impression that all the main characters' voices (at least) are their own. m. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Jun 1997 11:27:37 +1000 (EST) From: "Smith / Jeanette Yvonne (MGM)" Subject: Re: [monkey] Monkey memorabilia As a doll collector I would really love to know if there were any Monkey dolls or figurines. O, as they were passing through this strange land void of males (they didn't know it at the time), they drink from this spring. I'm not saying they shouldn't, but, it seems such a waste of effort, just enjoy ;) > I read a book about evil recently which said that evil is > actively preventing the spiritual development of others whilst > concealing your own weaknesses (or rather that's a naive translation > of it). Actively preventing the development of others I understand, but the part about concealing one's weaknesses, how is that bad?... maybe, it's only bad if you use it in conjunction with the other requirement :) Better not do that then, wouldn't wanna be evil ;) > Hmm... I really think I should read this book. Is the book quite > deep, or is it just a story, really? I really don't know. All I know is what I've picked up from tv & lots of martial arts movies & serials hehe... But, if you wanna think about it... the stories were composed about 500 hundred years ago, for an audience of - one would assume - illiterate peasants & farmers, so it's pretty safe to bet that superficially, it's not going to be too deep. What the shell encompases probably depends on you. bye :) ------------------------------ End of Monkey Digest V1 #33 *************************** ----------------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the Monkey Mailing List digest list, send mail to: majordomo@valinor.eldar.org with the following command in the body of your email message: unsubscribe monkey-digest To send a message to the list, send mail to: monkey-digest@valinor.eldar.org If you have any problems or questions, send mail to: owner-monkey@valinor.eldar.org For lots more information and news about "Monkey", check out the Monkey! web site: http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Towers/8153/
