Re: [monkey] kung fu ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 09 Jun 1997 11:22:39 +1000 From: "Clare O'Farrell" Subject: [monkey] kung fu There was an amazing French documentary last night on SBS titled _Shaolin: Zen temple of kung fu_ Has anbody else seen this? The worst bit I think was watching one of the monks licking a glowing red hot shovel and being none the worse for it!! One of the forms of training involved beating your body with really thick sticks and bricks for 4 hours a day for 4 years!!! Not to mention getting repeatedly rammed in the stomach and back by a *really* thick log (a battering ram really!) This in between reading Buddhist sutras and meditating. There were also a couple of good snippets of monkey style kung fu ((this is *not* the style Monkey does in the series btw) and also drunken style kung fu - a classic - where the staggering and uncordinated movements of a drunk are used to beat someone to a pulp. There were also the rosary bead techniques. As one monk explained when they are not using these quite heavy wooden beads for praying they use them for 'exercise' (read beating people to a pulp again!). I like it! I also saw one of the monks using the same staff as the one Sandy uses. What impressed me most was that after all this incredibly severe training and praying the monks were really cheerful, down to earth and friendly. Yeah, was a really good show, though 60 Minutes had something along the same lines late last year. The most interesting bit for me was the drunken martial arts style which I am a particular fan of. There are good examples of it in the movies Drunken Master I and II by Jackie Chan- absolutely smashing stuff! - ------------------------------------------------------------- Richard Pang - 3rd year Computer Engineering University of New South Wales. s2173826@cse.unsw.edu.au "If you're going to get mad at me every time I o something stupid then I guess I'll have to stop doing stupid things." I was one of those, but, don't you think that just one saturday afternoon movie was more than enough fruit, compared to weeks of Ulyses? > besides, couldn't you also accuse G-Force of being a tease - every episode > (except for the end), G-Force foils Spectra's plans, but Zoltar always > manages to escape, so that he/she(was Zoltar really a woman??) can wreak > havoc yet again... They did it with style. If I can remember correctly, the difference between G-Force & Ulyses, was that Ulyses did not have a nemisis, they were basically putting around the universe trying to solve some O-so-mysterious-case, bumping into left-over monsters. Hmmm... come to think... just like monkey. I guess Ulyses was just a crap cartoon... bye. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 9 Jun 1997 09:07:03 +0800 From: "Robert Vong" Subject: Re: [monkey] Who's your favourite character? > Who is your favourite character in "Monkey"? (it may not be > Monkey...) It was monkey. He wore the coolest outfits. That red jacket with the gold trimming, his metallic blue pants coupled with that head ring was just too cool. Does anyone else feel that he didn't look quite right without his head ring? His winter outfit was also quite nice, hehe... I remember I used to have this jacket which reminded me of that hehe... Also, those boots were just toooo cool. His magic staff & his cloud... bye. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 9 Jun 1997 10:14:19 +0800 From: "Robert Vong" Subject: Re: [monkey] kung fu > There was an amazing French documentary last night on SBS titled _Shaolin: > Zen temple of kung fu_ > Has anbody else seen this? Yeah hehe... they've shown this once or twice before. I am left with the impression that they were just doing it for the camera. Anyway, about 2 months ago, 60 minutes did a story on this... it was basically the same, except this show didn't mention much about what they do with their peepees hehe... > The worst bit I think was watching one of the > monks licking a glowing red hot shovel and being none the worse for it!! hehe... the hanging meditation would be quite harsh, also. And the old guys, some looked really really old... bye. ------------------------------ End of Monkey Digest V1 #27 *************************** ----------------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the Monkey Mailing List digest list, send mail to: majordomo@valinor.eldar.org with the following command in the body of your email message: unsubscribe monkey-digest To send a message to the list, send mail to: monkey-digest@valinor.eldar.org If you have any problems or questions, send mail to: owner-monkey@valinor.eldar.org For lots more information and news about "Monkey", check out the Monkey! web site: http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Towers/8153/
