I always rather liked Sandy. He was quiet and didn't get too much attention, but came up with some funny stuff. He was an expert underwater, and had those cool skulls around his neck. Best of all was his priests staff thing which was every so much more stylie than Pigsy's rake. I don't really remember many episodes where Sandy takes a large role in things, but he was always the most stable and least troublesome of the three. I vaguely remember a long ago seen episode where the disciples come up against a Face-Monster, a demon with the power to assume other peoples forms. It managed to split up the disciples and get Tripitaka into its possession. I think Monkey probably saved the day, but I remember Sandy and Pigsy parting. Sandy was ever so sad as he couldn't stay with Pigsy any longer, as he couldn't trust him, for fear he was the Face-Monster. I remember the quiet sadness of Sandy very well. I think that was quite typical of him. Ben ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 02 Jun 1997 05:12:01 PDT From: "Howell Parry" Subject: [monkey] Video formats around the world... Hello....since people are currently discussing copying Monkey episodes for other people on the mailing list, I thought a list of countries around the world, and their video standards might be handy - so you can find out if someone else on the mailing list uses the same video format as you, and so can send you episodes on video without needing to do any conversion. I wondered if the > two were the same. A king appears to Tripitaka in a dream. He tells HER that a sorceror had come to his land where there had been an almighty drought for years. The sorceror performed a raindance and there was rain. So the king invited the sorceror to stay as his honoured guest forever more (or something). Anyway, the sorceror killed the king and then took on the guise of the king and ruled the kingdom without anyone suspecting. The king appeared to Tripi in order to whinge about it a bit. So Monkey etc. come here, persuade the prince that the king is not the king after all and that the real king is at the bottom of the well. Monkey tricks Pigsy into going down the well by telling him there are women down there (there are, but they are about 800 years old and plagued by warts). Pigsy retrieves the body, they bring it up. Monkey gets a pill from an ancient man who playes Mahjong. This pill restores the king to life. Everyone then goes and confronts the sorceror who does a runner and gets smacked by Monkey's stick. Don't know about the Taoist animal spirits though. Think that might be a different episode. John .oOo. Another bit I liked was in the second episode. Monkey changes himself into a white mouse and Tripitaka says in a rare attempt at a joke 'You know, it's an improvement'. Monkey replies in a tinny mouse voice 'Very funny! hah, hah, hah' I still like that bit right at the end of the series where Monkey kisses the horse. Speaking of names for the horse - when the dragon first changes into a horse Monkey, true to his usual insulting form, calls him a 'haybag'. *********************************************************** Clare O'Farrell email:c.ofarrell@qut.edu.au web page: http://www.qut.edu.au/edu/cpol/foucault/ 'Let battle commence. Can someone please fill me in on who/ where the various members are from?? Is it mainly an Australia-UK thing? As for myself, I am currently at the University of Qld (Brisbane,Aust), usually hanging around the Physics and Maths postgrad students, hoping someone will adopt me, and generally keeping as far away from the Law library as possible, for fear of being accused of actually belonging there. Maybe by next yr, a pink cloud in the form of a physics honours course will magically appear and rescue me from that, oh, too horrible a fate... anyway, i was just wonodering what other countries have screened Monkey, how big was it when it first came out (I know in Japan, the actors are quite famous), is there any possible way in which i could obtain copies of the whole series on video?? As some may know, in Australia the ABC no longer has the rights to it and Foxtel has stolen it from the public arena. It's a crime!!#(&$^@!!!! No person (young or old) should be denied this basic human right to watch Monkey, simply because they don't have the financial status so as to be able to afford cable. m. ------------------------------ End of Monkey Digest V1 #21 *************************** ----------------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the Monkey Mailing List digest list, send mail to: majordomo@valinor.eldar.org with the following command in the body of your email message: unsubscribe monkey-digest To send a message to the list, send mail to: monkey-digest@valinor.eldar.org If you have any problems or questions, send mail to: owner-monkey@valinor.eldar.org For lots more information and news about "Monkey", check out the Monkey! web site: http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Towers/8153/
