It was hilarious...and deliberately so. Seeing it again this time around on Galaxy, I am also seeing a whole range of things I didn't notice even last time it was on in 1988!! (and I was pretty 'grown up' then!) That time I watched it the series inspired me to take up a martial art (aikido). I'm still looking for a dojo which has the same fun approach as Monkey has!! They all take themselves so seriously! Maybe one day I'll succeed in finding one! There are quite a few party scenes. A really good one with Tripitaka in one of my favourite episodes 'Outrageous Coincidences', another good one inside the stomach of a carp (!!) and a really superb party in The Land of Nightmares in Monkey's honour (where the excellent line in my sig comes from). I just love the way Monkey eats fruit - takes a bite and throws the apple, peach or banana, as the case may be, over his shoulder. Imagine: take 9: Monkey eating peaches in heaven (there goes another case of peaches!) John says >I don't think anyone can ever have taken so much care over a >translation as with Monkey. They couldn't have done it any better, >could they? If anyone else had done it, it would surely have been a >complete disaster. I totally agree - it really is a masterpiece. Whoever did the translation must have had great fun and the actors doing the dubbed voices certainly seem to be enjoying themselves as well. >You have to give Monkey credit, ALL of the characters are superb in >their own right. It's also a superb piece of casting as well. All the characters have such strong and individual personalities. They all have their idiosyncratic strengths and weaknesses - including Tripitaka. It really is a bit of a pity about the third season which is playing on Galaxy at present. When one sits down to watch one of the earlier episodes after viewing one of those there is really no comparison. Not enough serious stuff in the third season... and the ghastly new pigsy and the silly horse!!! (sorry I couldn't resist!) I got a flyer in my mail yesterday for a new home delivery noodles place and one of the dishes was called Monkey Magic, with a comment 'As Monkey says 'irrepressible!'. BTW I subscribed to the digest form got the confirmation message back but nothing has changed! Anybody else have the same problem? I'm really enjoying this new Monkey list - it's fun! Hi All, Believe it or not, but I used to actually have a Monkey computer game! It was called "Monkey Magic" and it came in one of those cheap and shonky budget games packages for the Commodore 64. It had fairly crappy graphics and the title screen had a picture of Monkey wielding his wishing staff. In the game, you played the character of Monkey and there were various levels. The first level involved fighting off a horde of baddies in a forest and if you passed that you got to do more "sophisticated" stuff like fighting demons on mountains and yes- flying in the cloud! (which was actually blue in the game!!) My Commodore 64 is gathering dust somewhere in my cupboard and the "Monkey Magic" game is probably in there somewhere too. In a couple of episodes, it actually came right down to the ground and Monkey stepped onto this massive piece of fairy floss! However, in the very beginning, the cloud effect was somewhat different. In the first few eps, the cloud was actually a large whitish one and when Monkey blew for it (oo'er!), it appeared through a "animation style" effect rather than a model shot. I think they realized that the first effect was a bit too crappy so they changed it, Nick. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 May 1997 09:23:27 PDT From: "Howell Parry" Subject: [monkey] Did they ever get to India? I felt sure they would have made it at the end of the third series... >But, presumably that's the whole point. >If they'd made it, wouldn't it mean that evil would have been >completely banished from the Earth? > >Call me naive, but I'm not sure that's happened just yet... Oh well - as you say, it would be inaccurate for them to get there and thus banish evil from the Earth... I'd still like to see the final episode; I've heard that Monkey loses his headband - is this true? About the end of the series ... There is an episode where some monsters present the scriptures to Tripitaka and then tell them they can fly home. Monkey asks why they can fly home when they had to walk all the way to India. This makes him suspicious and the ruse is revealed. I thought the whole idea of the series is that they do =not= get to India to show that all life is a journey. Or something like that.
