I spent most of it feeling a bit betrayed by the new Pigsy. And the stories themselves weren't as good really. But I really liked Yu-lung. He was brilliant. They should have made more of him, I think. He never did very much. .oOo. Well I have Galaxy, but it sells Arena to Foxtel. Monkey! has been on for the second time in a year. Series like Twilight Zone and Battlestar Galactica and Space 1999 seem to be repeated frequently, and Monkey! is promoted as an attraction so it will probably be run a few times during the year too. Frequent repeats I like, it gives me a chance to see every episode of the series. I catch it when it's convenient, but don't bother to tape it, the ads annoy me when I was used to seeing them without on the ABC. This morning's episode was "A Shadow So Huge" from season 2. For serious hard core viewing of a favourite episode I have the tapes from when the series was on the ABC. Monkey's fighting style is bo-jutsu and kung-fu. This info comes from the Monkey site at http://www.csc.liv.ac.uk/~u5ms/monkey/index.html I've always wondered how realistic the fight styles on Monkey are. The way Monkey wields his staff makes me think that the choreographer takes time to make the fights look real. For example, Monkey tends to deflect blows with his staff rather than just block them outright. I have been told it is preferable to deflect than to block. That way, your wrists don't get broken. Yes I was aware of this! - but there are lots of different styles of fighting with the bo and I was interested in knowing which one!!! I actually think Monkey is rather good - his martial spirit is excellent and he clearly is a pretty good martial artist in his own right - I particularly enjoy the fights where he is fighting with someone else who has the same level of martial skills as he has eg the excellent fight with the spirit of all great snakes and another really good one with three villagers in the village terrorised by Sandy's father(!). Rather than being choreography a lot of the fights might be based on standard weapons kata. I was wondering which system... I have watched Monkey every time it has been on and each time I am inevitably very disappointed by season 3. The new Pigsy is a non entity (he makes you realise what an incredible screen presence the first one has) and the horse is well... so stupid. They have also gone all out for the comedy and forgotten about the necessary serious bits which make the first two seasons work so well. IThe opening and ending sequences are nowhere near as good. They have also gone all out I'd agree that the second Pigsy isn't anywhere near as (a) convincing (b) competently acted (c) well characterised as the first; however I'd just like to put in my 2c (or should that be 2 yen?) about Yu Lung... I think he was a potentially very interesting character who quite simply wasn't utilised. Of course one can debate about whether there was in fact 'room' for his character in the ensemble (I'm 50-50 on this point myself) but on the whole I think if he had been handled better there's a fair old chance he would have been an asset.
